Al I had a buddy who had an Oliver 16” jointer and it was the scariest machine I have ever used. When it comes to face jointing wide boards I will stick to a surface planer and a sled. That machine just looked scary and when you turned it on you knew it was going to live up to its image.

A planer sled is one of those things I keep promising myself to build one of these days.

How long did it take thee to loosen those bolts 'almost' totally loose?

I'm sitting here laughing because I was about to ask him almost the same question.

When it happened I honestly thought it hit the car. At that point I was thinking I should lock up her .38

I am not sure what is so scary. I have a Powermatic 6" long bed jointer. I bought it when I was still working out of my garage. I wish I had bought an 8" Powermatic now that I have a dedicated shop. I will not buy the 8" now. I will wait until I find a 12" at a reasonable price. It may not ever happen but oh well. I do have the room for it.

I don’t know exactly but when facing boards I never felt totally in control of the piece using that jointer. I had an 8” Jointer in my shop and really liked it. Now that I have the room I plan on getting another one. Al there is no need to build a fancy sled. A piece of melamine, shims and some screws work fine. It’s not that frequent of an event for me to spend any time building a fancy one.

A friend I've mentioned here before who does a lot of restoration millwork has / had a 13" jointer. Quite ancient... I say "had" because I have not seen it for years. He moved it out of his main shop into a sort of a side room and the last I saw it large quantities of wood of all kinds had really closed in on it tightly. I'm not sure if he still owns it now or not. If I recall right it was at least 8' long over all. It's been too long so I don't remember if it was one with a built in motor or if it was sat up for a line shaft. If it had a motor it was likely 3 phase.
He is about buried in all manner of bits of wood. He uses a lot of old wood for some of his work and seldom tosses anything out. He does a lot of work on historic state properties and they usually prefer aged wood over new looking stuff.

As will a piece of melamine, some masking tape, and hot glue.

This method was invented by Phil Thien, the same guy who invented the Thien baffle for dust collectors. It’s my go-to technique, and it works beautifully.
