New to shopsmith

Just had a shopsmith 10e or 10er given to me after a friends grandfather died. However it does not have the shopsmith tag on it is there any other place a serial # may have been located? Or would it be safe to just order er attachments and and go with it?

The S/N is only on the tag. ER attachments are all backwards compatible if it is actually an E so go for it.

If you can take some pictures and post them here. It may help identify it. Ext. table headstock main table had/has minor differences that can sometimes determine what version (E or ER) it is.

You may find some free documentation helpful that can help you find what you have.

Wtih the help of many here in the forums, I was able to restore and enhance the 10E Preliminary Manual, The 10E Owners Guide and the 10ER Owner's Guide and make them available in Zoomable PDF format. You will find them in a folder titled 10E & 10ER MAGNA under the My Google Drive at http://www.shopsmith.com/ss_forum/viewt ... 90#p185690

There is something in the Preliminary Manual that I created and added, with the valuable help of many here in the forums as I document the "Shopsmith Magna 10E to 10ER Production Changes through the years" It is Appendix C in the manual, and with the urging of forum members, also now a Stand Alone Document in that folder.

You will find a good bit there. You may also wish to peek in the Bearings folder as 10E and 10ER bearings etc. are discussed in the Shopsmith Bearing Guide there.

About the only parts that are version specific are the Quill Lock in the Headstock (3 types) and Way Tube Locks for the Headstock and Carriage (2 types). Because the early locks were a double wedge and the later a single wedge they are not inter-changeable. Some parts have to be changed as a complete assembly. Example: changing from the early table trunnion to the later version as it has different stops and related parts. Again some good pictures of it can help us identify it for you. Check out the manuals Everett told you about and they will show you differences to compare to yours. Be aware that your Model 10 could have already had some changes that may keep it from completely matching. A common upgrade was for the early 10E with the wood extension table was to be changed the metal extension table.
