12" planner knife adj gauge??

Having problems with adjusting planner knives on my 12" planner. I ordered and received a SS planner knife gauge. Then when I when to adjust the planner knives the blades hit the gauge with out any height adjustment to the knife. The planner manual shows the gauge with and arc and that the blades are too barely touch the gauge. The recently received planner gauge has no arc. I have two of the recently purchased gauges and there is no arc like the one in the manual. I have contacted SS about this problem today and was told that they would get back to me. Now I know that it will be two or three business day before anybody gets back to me. My question to the forum is has anybody had a similar problem from a recently ordered planner knife within the last year what have they done to resolve the problem? I would grind and arc to the gauge but I don't have template to go by. Thanks in advance.

I bought a Knife Setting Gauge from Shopsmith about two and a half years ago after I bought my Pro Planer. When setting the knives the edge of the knife should just touch the Knife Setting Gauge at some point along the angle. The Knife Setting Gauge did not come with a mark for where that should be. A Shopsmith technician told me to make a mark where my Planer knives just touch the gauge and that is the point all knife edges should touch the gauge for proper setting. The picture shows the mark I added to my Knife Setting Gauge.

Okay the more I think about the planner knife gauge the more I realize they are useless without the arc. These new planner knives are defective without the arc. Does anyone have an alternative to adjusting the planner knives?

Thanks Russ, I remember something about the mark with a previous planner gauge but did not see it in the manual I have. My planner knife blade hits the gauge and stops and this is without any height adjustment to the blade. The blade is sitting on the end of the very end of the cutter head and still hit the gauge. So I'm kind of at a loss here. Thanks for you input.

I have the current Pro Planer Manual dated 12/91 and the Knife adjustment instructions are on pages 29 to 31. It shows the mark I added to my gauge at 7/16" up from the bottom and call it the Zero Line. That is the same place I made my mark when I first used it. Check your Manual under Maintenance if you have a different one than I have.

thanks Russ, I have an earlier manual and no go on the marking of the gauage. At the point of zero it that where the blade stops or just barely touches the gauge and keeps rotating. I will keep looking but there does not seem to be any adjustment because the blade is sitting on the end of the cutter head and when I place the gauge in position and rotate the cutter head it still hits the gauge. I will submit a picture of the gauge. thanks

I used google photo to crop my pictures. This is the same gauge you have russ like I said before even if I mark it 7/16" from the bottom I don't see how that will help since there seems to no adjustment because the blades is already hitting the bottom of the cutter head.

Here are the instructions from the planer manual for your gauge. It tells you where to mark the gauge. The blades are supposed to touch the gauge at the mark when properly adjusted. It does work perfectly. I have done it many times.

If this does not work then there is another problem. Are you sure the blades are Shopsmith? If the blades are not Shopsmith and are wider they will hit the gauge.

Thanks russ, I marked my planner gauge 7/16" and the adjustments look good.
