I need some assistance!

I am a wee bit disappointed with the hanging brackets that came with the cabinets. It is just a metal bracket that is pre-drilled for attachment to the cabinet and is then to be screwed to the wall. The holes that are to be used for attaching to the wall are centered on the bracket and are 14' on center. Real good if hanging one cabinet centered on a pair of 16" centered studs.

I'm NOT. The 5 cabinets are going on the wall fit snug end to end and not one of them will be centered on a pair of studs. Thinking seriously of hanging a 3/4" plywood backer board to attach to.

The cabinets are each 30" tall and the upper white wall is 48" (the area above the gray).

I WANT storage space above the cabinets as well as room to my Shopsmith equipment (some of it) beneath the cabinets.

Outlets and overhead lighting yet to come but is scheduled.

Another way would be two horizontal 2X4's.

Given Twistsol's measurement of the SS with band saw installed and your wall height, if you mount the cabinets high enough to put the SS underneath you won't have much storage room on top of the cabinets and you will need a ladder to access the upper shelves in the cabinets. Here is an idea assuming the cabinets will be mounted in the horizontal position shown in the picture. There is room at the left end to put the band saw mounted SS with the band saw past the left end of the cabinets. That way the cabinets could be hung lower. Just high enough to clear the shorty with the belt sander mounted. That would give you much more storage space on top and you probably would not need a ladder to access the upper reaches of the cabinets.

You could also leave a gap between a couple of the cabinets for the bandsaw to fit into

If you have the ability to start from scratch as you are doing Dusty I would have a couple guys come in and cover the shop walls with 3/4” plywood. For me it gives me the most flexibility in hanging cabinets, band saw blades, jigs etc on the wall. Food for thought.

And thast's good food too. I am going to use a 3/4" backer board to give me a reliable surface to attach to. When those cabinets get loaded they will me very heavy. Most. if not all, of my powered hand tools will go there as will the drill bits, router bits, etc.

Once done, the area "on top" of the cabinets will be for my museum of old tools that I will not part with but very, very seldom use.

Boy, am I ever loaded in that department... Much of that stuff is really heavy. Some of it will require homemade extra heavy and secure hangers. My broad axe jumps to mind as an example and when is the last time you walked into a store and bought a hanger for a "foot adze" ? At the other end of the scale (intentional pun) I have a number of ancient measuring devices that are pretty fragile. What are some of your "museum" tools Dusty? Just wondering what you put in that class? Likely an area of wide opinion among the group members.

Most of my old tools are tools that were handed down. Folding rules, squares, hand saws, coping saws, bench vise I can hardly lift, hand axes, sickle, wooden clamps, etc. In the category of "don't use" are three drill motors that work great but are all metal and have two wire power cords.

The rest of what I have could probably be referred to as "junk" but keep that to your self.
