Post by e2512 »

Does anyone have a molder insert for the 10 ER? If so, Can you please post the dimensions? I want to make one.

Thanks, Tom

Not sure there was one.

Early Mark 5 accessories catalog listing says to use the Dado insert (1" slot) for the Magna Moulder.

I saw this one listed on eBay. Maybe it was shop made and not from Shopsmith.

Looks like the Dado insert, but with a shorter slot. Perhaps someone cut it from a blank insert. Here is a link to a different accessory catalog. it also says to use the Dado insert.

Just spotted this listing on Ebay, for Mark 5 Moulder insert, similar to the picture you posted. (Over priced in my opinion)

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Shopsmith-Shop ... Sw95lbBGdp

Perhaps one of these was modified to fit the 10ER, per Skip Campbell.

Sorry I don't have one to measure, but could you extrapolate the the slot length from the one in the picture you posted.

From looking at the PTWFE(Model 10) plan and a M5 molder insert, the dimensions should be:

length 10"
width 3"
slot 4" x 1 1/4" centered both directions.

I leave the hold down screws for thee.

Ron,
I agree with you about the three table inserts on ebay being over priced. Buying the two Shopsmith inserts new would be just under $65 and I do not know what the one in front goes to. It looks like some other tools dado insert.

As far as using an insert for moulding on the Model 10's the dado insert will work fine. It has just a bit more open space before and after the cut. No need to get or make a custom molder insert. If you insist on making one, HogWinslow1960 on eBay makes his replacement inserts out of 1/4" thick aluminum and they are very durable. He make a blank one if you want a head start.

Russ,
I picked up a couple of Mark 5 inserts, one blank and one of the shaper inserts with the stepped hole, never used still in their original boxes, last year. The seller was also in Canada and I got the two of them for just under CDN$30 including shipping. Some day I'll cut them down to fit the 10ER. :)

Note that the original poster Tom, e2512, is HogWinslow, ;) so I expect he will be adding a Moulder insert to his line soon. :)

I did not catch that. Thanks, Ron

Hi Tom,
It's been a long while since we have spoken. The bearings you changed to still work great and are a good alternative for those who can't get the original Fafnir bearings.
I have both a Dado and a Molder insert for the Model 510/520/M7 tables and the molder slot is 4-1/4" long by 1-1/4" wide centered in the plate width and over the spindle. That is slightly wider than the Dado insert's slot and slightly longer than JPG quoted.
Tom, I hope that helps.

Thanks for the dimensions Russ.

The NTN Bearings I sell have worked out great. I've sold them for a few years now and haven't gotten a complaint yet. That's why I started selling them for the newer models of Shopsmiths. Customers asked for them, so I added them to the line.

I don't know if I'll sell the molder insert. I've never been asked for one so I have to figure there's no demand. Then again, when I get bored in the shop there's no telling what will happen.

Thanks to all posters, Tom
