Re: Today in the shop (Custom Dollies)

I now have 3 modified dollies and one more to do. I wanted to get to the sub-base part and I had a couple of hours to work on it this early afternoon.

I was going to do it the old way and even started drawing the lines on the workpiece then I thought why am I going this way when I have a Shaper Origin sitting here????

So if you see pencil marks disregard them........ Anyway I thought I would share a picture of the bottom of one of these containers so have a better idea of the hows and whys of what I did.

I used the sketch-up drawing and the plug-in to generate the file for the Shaper. I then used the engraving bit to make a line so I could use a guided saw to cut out the part later on. I also did the cut-outs so I could idenity where they were to add some double sided tape to hold the parts in place while I was working on them.

I did an inside cut then came back with an offset cut of .1" to clean things us. This is the work piece after the cut outs were done.

We had plans at 2:00 and it was about that time but I wanted to try the case to see if it fit before we left. It didn't! OK no time to see what the problem was but when I went to put the case back on the shelf it didn't set flat..... what? Turns out one of the cut outs still had some tape on it and it had gotten stuck to the case, and that was the issue.... I had taken a picture of it and when I looked at the picture it was clear as to what had happened, just glad it wasn't a design fault.

When we got back I cut it to size and used a couple of screws to mount it as seen here:

Here it is with a case sitting on it. The base is not locked to the case but the base does keep the case from sliding around, which is all I need at this point.

Now all I need to do is cut 3 more of these.

Finished the project today. Stacked three 1/4" plys and cut them all at once.

Now I have a row of containers all stacked under my shopsmith. You can get 4 of them across so the two red shopsmith cabinets have now moved off and are stacked vertical. I had two of them under the shopsmith but with the lift assist I had to rotate one to get it to fit and it was more of a issue then a solution so that era has ended.

I'll try and get a picture later.
