Re: New ShopSmith Owner!
Dave,
I looked at the Serial Number and it would have been made sometime in 1957. There are no monthly serial number listings for February of 1956 to December of 1957 so we have to make a best guess. It's the same problem we have with the missing serial numbers for the Mark 5 during the same time. In 1953 they were still making the Model 4E Jointer and the Model 10ER was still in production. The Model 620 Jointer came out with the Mark 5 in March 1954. The original 620 Jointer was the same as the 4E with the SPT mounting posts added to the outfeed/base casting. Later, like yours has, they changed the table riser knob and the fence/quadrant lock to the current style that still comes on a new one today. They also changed the logo for the guard. Your cutter guard has that second style logo and I might add looks "sharp" with the paint job you did.

Well, Your not gonna believe this but I just stepped into some Poo Poo! Searching on the web last night I ran across this post on Craigs List. Purchased it today for $80. Has both 5 inch pulley and drive adapter accessories. Now I have the original set up that should be with my 10ER! At least I have the SPT adapters so I can still attach other SPT accessories. I am so excited!!! I hope that's not weird!

Had a nice run from Buffalo to Selkirk on my train today to get in early enough to mess around with the E4 jointer. I must say it performed really good. I'm very satisfied with the results. Just wondering if I should just leave it gray paint or paint it blue to match. So here are some pictures of the setup.

Re: New ShopSmith Owner!
Assuming you have sufficient paint, I would absolutely make it match.

Re: New ShopSmith Owner!
What's really amazing is this equipment is over 60 years old and runs so good and smooth! It's like watching an old steam locomotives running gear traveling down the tracks looking at all the moving parts. I'll definitely be replacing the sealed bearings on both jointers.
