Original 10ER Sales Receipt

My latest Shopsmith purchase came with quite a bit of paperwork. One Item I found quite interesting is the original sales receipt dated 10-10-50. The serial number on the machine is R39267.
My research on Palace Hardware came up with very little. The receipt shows 3 locations in San Francisco. I managed to find 2 of the 3 in a newspaper ad. The Market Street location had a different address. It showed 581 Market Street.
I may keep this machine just because of the provenance.
Another item is the padlock. On stiff paper, it explains the spindle taper.

Mill Valley is about 14 miles north of San Francisco.

That's a nice piece of information to have. Purchased 10-10-50 so near the factory means it was probably made in Sept. or Aug.

After careful consideration I have decided to keep this machine rather than clean it up and sell it.
When I saw the ad on Craigslist the seller did mention the original sales receipt. But what really caught my interest was the 4E Jointer headstock.
So I drove the 40 miles to Kelso Washington hoping the Jointer bracket was there. It was not. But I bought the machine anyway.
All the paperwork, lots of accessories and quite a few duplicate parts.
Such as 2 motor brackets, 2 tailstocks, 2 carriages, 2 clamps holding the way tubes together, 2 table extensions (1 with a short bracket, 1 with long bracket) and 2 headstocks. Having 2 headstocks made sense. But the rest do not.
My plan is to completely restore it and eventually hook a 4E Jointer to it.
And since I have the Power mount Adapter kit I would like to get the 620 Bandsaw for it.
Only real down side to the purchase was the speed changer had been repaired and has issues.
Owning two Shopsmiths is better than one right?
Just think. I have a 10 in 2 now.

I'd like to see pictures of the repaired speed changer and it's issues.

Having two machines pales in comparison to some of the Forum Members.
Here's some photos of the Speed Changer. The post on the left was welded on to the ring. And the outer ring with the post was completely replaced. Someone did a pretty good job on the repair. The problem is there is some slop between the replaced outer ring and the existing inner ring.

Someone machined a whole new pulley arm besides "welding" the "dog ear" back on the base. It makes me wonder what the broken pulley arm looked like. The "dog ear" breaking off and the base broken in half are the most common damage I have seen on the speed changer. The dog ears are broken by turning the screw assembly to far. The base is broken in half by over tightening the nut that holds it to the headstock and it not moving with the headstock when re-positioned on the way tubes. I have had one broken pulley arm but do not know what caused the damage. The person I bought it from didn't know as he had bought it that way.

Someone had skills to remake that part. I wonder if the slop could be taken out with a thin shim, (pop can aluminum maybe)

Also, although the early speed changers were shipped with the crank mounted on the right side of the ears, on the later ones it is mounted to the left. This gives more clearance between the crank and the headstock lock lever and avoids interference.

I was not able to repair it but was lucky enough to find that part for sale and replaced it. It sits in a box with a broken base piece that again I was lucky enough to replace when I bought a 10ER with a speed changer that had a broken ear that had been repaired but also had a replacement base part. I have found with enough patience most parts will show up for sale sometime.
