Today in the shop (An Appeal To Heaven Tree)

Yes just like the one on the flag, well almost anyway. I used the Shaper Origin to do it but one could use a jig saw or scroll saw.

Will paint it green and then it will be done for this year. Had some other ideas for it but running out of time to attempt them.

When I seen the title I thought it was about a tree named Ailanthus altissima

I actually split and dried a piece once just to see what it looked like , It was soft and it split pretty bad when it dried .

I decided that I would continue on with a few projects and one is based on the tree. I have a plan to make some ear ring trees and this will be the same tree design.

Of course I needed to use thinner material so I got out my 1/8 plywood and started cutting a few more. I've got five cut out and still need to make one more but running short of material unless I can squeeze one more out in the other grain direction or get another sheet to use.

Still working on the hole pattern, want room for 12 sets, ie 24 holes. One thought was a random pattern like one might see on a Christmas tree, the other was a geometric pattern of some sort like perhaps a six point star with two holes at each of the points..... ideas welcome.

As for the name of the thread it has to do with history, you can look up either pine flag or appeal to heaven flag for examples and the educational experience.

Next up was to make some bases for the trees. Well no time like the present to play with the SO some more.

It is a simple slot that is centered on the block and is 1/4" deep x 1/8" wide.

BTW the slots are what the trees go in in case that wasn't clear.

I didn't have much time to work on this project but I did manage to gang cut the trees to fit the stand I made. Used the bandsaw so I'm getting closer to being ready to finish them. Still have to sand the edges to get rid of the strings left from the router operation and then some light surface sanding. Have to play with a couple of ways of making them green........ but not on the trees until I have it figured out.

The forest is now all stained in green. When dry I'll add a spray of matte clear then when that is dry I get to drill the holes.

And the finished product, 1 of 6. I'm drilling each one separately so they will all look just a little bit different once the ear rings are in place.

Hope the grand daughters will be happy.

I also have a woodworking question for you. The SO seems like a great way to make a pattern. But once you have a pattern, which would be faster for “production” ... your OPR, the SO, or a conventional router with a pattern bit?
