Identifying a year of manufacture

Post by roneg »

I'm looking at a SS on Craigslist, but the serial number
030191 isn't helping me to determine what year the model 555540 is, or any information about it. Can anyone help me with this?

SS went to date codes at some time in the 80's. That machine was made March 1 1991.

Your Mark V is closely related to mine. Same Model #555540. The serial number (date code) on mine is 111791.

Like all things in life - time has brought about some changes. Mine is now a Mark V Model 520 with Double Tilt.

Shopsmith went to date coding December 1987. Previous Mark 5 and Mark V 500 made by Shopsmith Inc. will have an SS in front of the serial number and start at SS 1001 to approx. SS 222500. Mark V 510 will have a 51- in front of the serial number for those made before date coding. There are Mark V serial numbers from 1981 and 1982 with the SS prefix that will match date codes. Date codes will show up as 030191 or 03-01-91. Earlier Shopsmith Mark 5's made by Magna Engineering Corporation, Magna Power Tool Corporation, Yuba Power Products and Magna American Corporation do not have the SS serial number prefix but their serial numbers are higher than the Shopsmith Inc. numbers starting at about 260400 to about 382600. These Mark 5 machines include the Greenies, Goldies and early gray paint schemes.

The sticker on my 510 was missing when I got it, but the vent says 51-006272. So does that mean mine was made 6-2-72?

From two posts back - "Mark V 510 will have a 51- in front of the serial number for those made before date coding."

That is why thine has no date sticker. ;)

Yours looks to have been made in 1986.
