Off for another adventure

Post by ryanbp01 »

Well, this weekend I will be off to pick up the 10er for the purpose of restoration. Since I have converted my MarkV into a Mark VII, in addition to viewing other members efforts, I thought it would be a good challenge for me. It promises to be an interesting journey.

Well, I picked it up last Sunday. I plan to post pictures of it as is tomorrow. It does have a serial number of E5466. I think it may be 1952 based upon the manuals (Montgomery Ward and Magna) which came with it, however I don't know for sure.

For a 1952 there should be five digits in the serial number. ;)

I would think E5466 would be 1948 made in the Eastern plant. The later manuals that came with it would suggest otherwise. The pictures should help bring more clarity.

I agree with what Ron said. The E in the serial number denotes it was made in the Eastern Plant and the serial number being that low puts it not long after the Eastern Plant went into production.

Your 10E has version 2 of the headstock, the larger Base and the 4 Bolt Headrest. It also has the Wood Extension Table and version 2 of the Tailstock. This information comes from the pictures I saw of it. 10ER's did not have the Wood Extension Table and it is one of the changes that occurred shortly before the 10E became the 10ER.

None of the 10E Manuals I have or have seen have a date on them. For a manual for it check under the Maintenance and Repair section for Shopsmith Large Format Drawings, Illustrations and More by Everett Davis. This will be one of the first three topics. In it you will find a wealth of information on the Shopsmith tools. Some are directly linked there and others are on “My Google Drive” with documents too large to be directly linked. Look for the restored Model 10E Manual.

Well, after working outside getting stuff finished before the weather turns, I thought I would post some pics on the 10er before I start taking things apart for restoration:

Nice steal!

The right-side-up ones usually sell for a little bit more. ;)
