Repairs near Portland, Oregon

Post by ddevil »

Does anyone know of a business that repairs Shop Smith head units in this area. Ihave had no luck getting the drive belt on the machine and am rapidly reaching the end of my rope. Thank you

Without looking at the instructions - I run the machine up to high speed - I think this is the place where you can disconnect the retaining pin from the quadrant assembly. After that is removed, I spread the lower sheves by pulling the outmost shieve outward. In this process of moving the shieve, tuck the belt into the gap so that the belt is as close to the shaft as you can get it. From that position you can "roll" the belt off of the upper shaft shieves. From there it can slid over the retaining pin and out of the headstock case. The installation is the reverse of this proceedure.

This is written in layman's language - hope it helps.

I'm sure this forum has links to written instructions for this proceedure. Maybe someone will tell you where they are.

Drive Belt Replacement

Post by dusty »

charlese had it right but here is another set of instructions that may help.

http://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/prod ... cement.pdf

POWER OFF and UNPLUGGED of course.

Let us know how this works out for you. If you need more help, maybe someone in the Portland area would be available to assist.

This one gives you a good view of the belt in question. A view of the headstocks' insides.

I knew someone could give you the correct SS instructions. Thanks Dusty!

BUT! My method is to remove the belt from the Control sheave (the upper sheave assembly) first. You can only do this by first tucking / pushing the belt into the motor sheave assembly while pulling the floating sheave outward. This method works better for me. Just don't let the floating sheave slam back onto one of your fingers. (I think this potential is why the SS instructions are to remove belt from the lower (motor sheaves first.)

The SS instructions are to first roll the belt off of the lower assembly. I found this to be a tough assignment - therefore did it my way. Take your choice.

ddevil: The links that Dusty gave were a big help to me when I replaced my control sheave. The belt was a little tuff to get on, but take your time and you can do it. Paul had a good suggestion also. If I wasn't a 1000 miles away from you, I come help you as I know how frustrated I was while mine was down. Hope you get it fixed soon.

ddevil - Yesterday I replaced my eccentric as I had broken the small bolt off. (Don't ask me how) Anyway it only took about an hour to replace the eccentric, make adjustments and recalibrate the high speed. Only took a minute or two to remove the drive belt - doing it by shoving the belt into the motor sheaves and removing it from the top first.
