510 Main Table

Just curious if anyone knows why the main table has four small 3/8” dia holes in the outer perimeter, one in each corner? None of the floating tables or extension tables have corresponding holes. So far in all my reading I have not found any reference to these holes and what they might be used for.

I think you can safely assume that they don't serve any useful purpose because mine doesn't have them.

Check out Dusty's post on this thread below. I believe the holes on the side of some of the 510 main tables were just for manufacturing purpose, i.e. they have no purpose for Shopsmith owners. Not every 510 table had these, I believe.

Tapped holes vs kep nuts(and access holes), center rail mounting hole location and rail tube wall thickness.

I also think the 'extra' holes in the sides are for tooling use during manufacture.

I have a 'what is it' question relating to 510 table systems. I picked up a 510 that had been modified with the 520 rails and included the leftover pieces. Those leftovers included two main table tubes and six auxiliary/extension table tubes, all with studs. It also included two 'other' tubes, same OD and ID, with mounting holes (2) rather than studs, and they are 10-1/2 inches long (longer than extension table, shorter than main). Hole spacing for the mounting holes is ~5-3/8 and there is a center hole for (I assume) the 510 thumb wheel clamp mechanism. It is not clear to me that they are SS, as opposed to shop-built, I don't think that whatever they were for was included with what I bought. Does anyone know what these are?

It sounds like someone modified, custom made or they came from another source. JPG suggested the Saw Smith Table Saw. The Standard and Pro Models had the same tubes as the original Mark V 510/505 tables using screws and spacers to hold the tubes to the table instead of studs. I do not know the length of the tubes. The Standard uses one set and the Pro has two sets for a wider table. The other two Saw Smith Table Saws had a rail and fence system similar to but different than the Mark V 520.

Thanks guys. If it is shop built it could be for almost anything, probably involving a table ;) . The tubes have more of a brushed finish, along the lines of extension table tubes but not the right size, compared to the plated(?) finish of the normal 510 table tubes with studs. It only recently occurred to me that they were some form of 510 table tube when I read here in someone's post about the original mounting system. I'm sure I will find a use for them.

Assuming they are indeed same id/od as 'stock' tubes, they would make good rails for use making a router table. . . .
