10ER - using a Mark V lower saw guard

I have been using a second generation, metal, Mark V lower saw guard on my 10ER for several years now. I think the first generation Greenie guard would work better, but they are hard to come by.

However, the screws that hold the end plate on, hit the table tubes, and I had to leave the plate off for the blade to sit properly in the insert. Skip Campbell, who originated this mod, cut the casting shorter to avoid that problem, but I didn't get around to doing that.

I now have a Mark V-500 5/8" saw blade arbor (555321), and it puts the blade a bit farther out from the quill, which gives enough space for the end plate to be installed.
Next problem, the end plate is higher than the outer edge of the guard body and catches on the tie bar, preventing the table from lowering all the way.
The solution was saw a slot at each end and bend the plate in so it cleared the tie bar.

That is very creative and looks like it certainly would protect the area under the table. I have thought about making one out of wood. Just no motivation with so many projects to do.

Hi Ron,

I have used the early Mark 5 10" blade guard set P/N's 505627 & 505628 for my 10ER for some time but didn't have the clearance problem you experienced.

I do not think the "Greenie" lower guard would work better. One reason is the attached way tube guide since Mark 5 way tubes are spaced differently than Model 10 way tubes. It would cause the guard to be tilted unless removed. The "Greenie" upper Guard cannot be used with the lower guard on a model 10 even if the lower guard is modified to clear the way tubes. Also the "Greenie" lower Guard doesn't allow for dust collection with it's rectangular dust chute unless modified.

Below is the Guard set attached to my Model 10ER. And yes, for all of you paying attention, the blade is mounted backwards so the Shopsmith label shows.

Below is the lower guard in place with the blade mounted on a Model 10 5/8" Arbor. Note the Arbor's washer and spacer arrangement. It keeps the blade from being against the far edge of the lower guard. I have not tried using a Mark V Arbor for this setup.
