Previously we investigated the Auto-Tracking and the Tension System of the Shopsmith 11" bandsaw, so in this video, we will move to the "Business End" of the saw and study the Upper and Lover blade guides and thrust bearing. We also talk a bit about the evolution of modern bandsaws and even take a brief look at a Taiwanese clone of the Shopsmith bandsaw, which was imported and sold by Total Shop.

Here's the link to our previous bandsaw video, which covered the Auto-Tracking and Tensioning System: https://youtu.be/zCBlSe4Z450

FWIW, the lower 'thrust' bearing performs as an auto-track bearing for the lower wheel the same as the upper wheel tracking bearing. Also the nylon bolt allows removal of the post side to side slop.

Did the cloners not have access to the patent drawings??? Probably could not read them!

They certainly could have accessed them, but it wasn't nearly as easy to do as it is today. They sure could have done a better job if they had, so thankfully they didn't, or as you say, didn't understand them. Scott

This video we will tackle Q&A's from my last video: "The "Business End" of the Shopsmith Bandsaw: Upper & Lower Guides & Bearings" which you can view here: https://youtu.be/FyMKTS8yM5c

Welcome to the first mid-week MGRs video, "STUMPED? Q&A" Why "STUMPED? Q&A?" Well, I asked viewers a week ago to suggest a good name for a follow-up show and while there were a bunch of wonderful suggestions, few conveyed the idea that what you are about to see is something new, but on a topic we've already covered. Another that I really liked was "Refinished", but I'm concerned that the YouTube algorithm will disappoint people who are looking for tips on refinishing!

Here are shortcuts to specific topics:
0:00 - Intro
0:52 - Dude, the audio in the "Business End" video was ROUGH!
1:44 - Side to side post movement
2:32 - A funky, SS BS trick, and a preview of our next video
2:51 - The brass setscrew's effect on the top bearing location
3:38 - Yes, the bottom thrust bearing is part of the Auto-Track system
3:57 - Did Shopsmith (Magna) make Sears Craftsman bandsaws?
4:53 - Groove worn in old style thrust bearings
5:55 - Replace the old bronze rollers with new ball bearing rollers?
6:30 - Do you HAVE to turn the MKV to SLOW before turning it off?
8:33 - It's nice to be loved

"Your wheels need to be co-planer" "Your tires are crowned" "The top wheel tilts forward and backward" "The blade rides in the center of the wheels". All myths. At least when we are talking about the Shopsmith Bandsaw.

In the video, we'll continue our chat about the Shopsmith bandsaw and give you a couple tips on how they work and what you might need to do to keep yours tracking properly.

0:00 - Intro
0:40 - Exclusion from modern woodworking publications
1:24 - A quick review of the difference in the SS BS wheels & tracking
2:17 - Auto-Track system
2:53 - Tensioning and Storage
4:11 - How much tilt in top wheel? (It's not coplaner!)

You Are (Probably) Waxing Your Shopsmith Mark V Wrong!

In order to get the most out of our Shopsmith Mark Vs and other shop tools, it's wise to give them an occasional polish with a good furniture grade paste wax. But what is the best wat to apply it? In this video we'll run through the most common things I wax on my Mark V and I'll offer a few tips that I learned while I was the Academy instructor at the Shopsmith Factory Showroom in Dayton, Ohio.

Here's the wax I use: https://amzn.to/2VJx9np You can get it on Amazon, but you'll save some money if you drop by your local hardware store or home center.

The Shopsmith 5 Piece Safety Kit: The Finger Keepers! (Take 2)

Watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrl6Jf5z_PY

I realized that the first upload of this vid was missing all the B-role action! Since the 1980's Shopsmith has been producing what to me are the best pieces of shop safety equipment available. Yes, the Microjig "GRR-RIPPER" is a superior push block, but if you already have this Shopsmith kit I encourage you to use it. In this video, I pantomime the use of this kit, and in the near future, we'll replace this vid with these tools in action.

The Shopsmith five-piece safety kit that Shopsmith has been providing with each Mark V and Mark 7 since the mid-80’s contains: 1 Push stick, one feather board, one fence straddled and a pair of push blocks. In March of 1985, Shopsmith was honored during the National Safety Council's 1984 Awards for Achievement in Product Safety Consumer Product Category for the development of the Shopsmith Safety Kit... a set consisting of four ingenious devices that have often been copied by others. The objective of this program is to recognize organizations which have significantly contributed to public safety.

Every time I set my Shopsmith Mark V into a new mode I always perform the 5-Point Safety Check (+1 when sawing):
1.) Set the table angle and lock the table in place.
2.) Lock the carriage.
3.) Set the table height and lock it in place.
4.) Lock the headstock lock.
5.) Lock the quill lock.
+1) Install the upper saw guard when making through cuts.

The Essential "Shopsmith Toolbox" (Old vs New)
12.jpg
12.jpg (10.07 KiB) Viewed 4388 times
Watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jd1aduaBvzc

If ever there was an unsung tool that plays a critical supporting role in the Shopsmith owner's shop it would be the 5/32" hex wrench. This tool is so important that years ago Shopsmith presenters began referring to it as the "Shopsmith Toolbox".

Since the beginning, Shopsmith tools have utilized a long, L-shaped 5/32" Allen, or hex wrench for adjustments and for the attaching of arbors and accessories. I'm a fan of this original style wrench, but there are times that a strong t-handle wrench is hard to beat.

A US-made t-handle wrench that is similar to the wrench shown in this video is available from Amazon at: http://a.co/ies2lfD This is actually a list of many of the tools that I have found to be indispensable in my shop. You may have to click the "Filter" link to show the items in the list. I suggest sorting them by priority. I really like this new wrench because the handle is sturdy and stout, but it's smaller than the ole Shopsmith wrench so it shouldn't be so easy to overtighten.

Getting the Most from your Shopsmith Mark V model 510 Fence

After hearing from a fellow Shopsmith user (Adam) who injured himself using one of his Shopsmith tools I finally have the motivation I need to get back into the shop and back in front of the camera. If you are one of the many orders of the Shopsmith Mark V model 510 you may have had issues with the fence. Because the fence is used for so many of the Mark V's functions it is critical that you know a few simple tips to get the most from it.

The Best Miter Gauge EVER! Hint: It's not one you'd ever guess. Shopsmith, Incra, Clones

Of course this is just my opinion, but since the mid 1980's I've been convinced that the best miter gauge that comes as standard equipment with any table saw is the Shopsmith miter gauge. This video has a surprising lack of tool usage; which I didn't notice until I gathered-up all my footage and photos tonight. Oh, well... More to come.

How To Safely Load a Shopsmith (AKA: Shop Smith) Mark V for Transport

Man, this is some fine videography!

Anyway, I recently purchased a ShopSmith Mark V and as I loaded it into my van I realized that I had some things to share with you on the subject.

BTW, this same technique works for moving a Shopsmith 10er, a Shopsmith Mark II, the new version of the Shopsmith Mark VII and any of the Mark V clones, such as the Total Shop. The old 1960's era Mark 7 really needs a two-person crew to safely load.

As I promised in the previous video on the "Business End of the Shopsmith Bandsaw" in this video we will cover the use of the bandsaw fence for straight cuts and for resawing, and while we are here we did a stupid bandsaw trick that the Shopsmith bandsaw can do by twisting the blade.

Don't forget to leave your questions, comments, and Cheapshots below and we'll address them during our mid-week video.

0:00 - Intro
0:19 - Shimming the Shopsmith Bandsaw Table
2:08 - Accomidating blade drift to get consistent, straight cuts
5:12 - MEasuring the drift of the blade
5:50 - Adjusting the fence to match the lead (or drift) of the blade
8:07 - A little resawing.
8:51 - So what good is the miter gauge on the Shopsmith bandsaw?
10:03 - A WEIRD trick: Twisting the blade to crosscut a long board. I am NOT recommending this!
14:00 - If Congress passes another stupid law
14:30 - Leave your Questions, Comments, and Cheapshots for inclusion in our mid-week video.

Watch that previous video here: https://youtu.be/FyMKTS8yM5c

If you'd like to see the Shopsmith handling some serious resawing, chick this video out: https://youtu.be/dbeWE_a3wmg?t=82
