Ahhhh, the sound of silence. The last of the vistors left today and the house is starting to return to normal after twelve days of activity. It's always nice to see the kids and grandchildren but .... We had another good and happy Christmas and that alone is worth it.
On the China subject, again, some of the kids chipped in to buy us a new BBQ but it is a little too big for our needs, (says right on the box " can cook 49 hamburgers"). As we went looking for alternatives, I could not find one not made in China, and that ticked me off as most were well known North American "manufacturers"? We are still looking!
I got another bird feeder made. This one for the grandaughter that wanted to buy one from me for ten dollars. Green Christmas tree shaped sides with a colourful red roof. I took Chuck's advice and charged her $2.00, less than the cost of the brass roof hinges but she was happy.
While working on the bird feeder, my SS started making some funny noise. I think it was trying to tell me that it needs a little attention. As soon as I get the workshop cleaned up I will do a little maintenance and hope that's all it needs.
At this point, I would like to wish all forum members a Happy New year and hope that we can all continue to enjoy our hobby in 2009!

We had a wonderful Christmas with the family, down in Morepark. Then back to the chilly old desert, but I can tell by the shadows at noon, the Sun is already getting a bit higher in the sky. Pretty soon it'll be getting warmer! That'll be making this guy happy.
Used the Shopsmith Gift card I got from my sweet wife, added a little and ordered up a strip sander, with extra belts. Since I will be using it to straighten and enlarge the holes in the vent grills - that project went on the shelf for a while.
In the meantime bought some wood and plywood and hardware to build one of those small chest of drawers where several of the drawers are actually trays (like TV trays).

Hi Guys,
We also had a great Christmas even though only half the kids were able to make it back east this year (however the 3 yr old grandson made sure there was no break in the action).
I once again received some wonderful gifts including 5 woodworking books by Nick to add to my collection and a bench dog. I have mentioned in the past that I love to visit Colonial Williamsburg, VA. I can watch the various trades people work all day! Well, my new bench dog was hand made in the Williamsburg blacksmith shop, to me it is the ulimate in "Made in the USA" (or British colony
). Just holding it in my hands brings good memories.
Chuck, I also received a PennState cap from my youngest to celebrate her recent acceptance for the fall 2009 semester. So I guess my Rose Bowl outcome wishes will need to differ from your's.
I wish all of you a healthy and happy new year!

We will all be waiting to see pictures of the chest that holds TV trays. Like others, I saw that article in the magazine and think it is a great project/idea.
With the rush to write the blog and my stress over chineese BBQ's, I forgot to mention ww gifts, and I did OK in that department too. Got a digital caliper so now I will be able to read the measurments, a renewal to a Canadian woodworking magazine, and a few small stocking stuffers from LV. One was the finger holder for small nuts, another was the triangular points to hold painted pieces while you paint the other side. On the first, I was telling my son-in-law just before opening gifts how I could have used one when adjusting pieces on my angle guide when making the bird feeders. Couldn't figure why my daughter hand a smile on her face. As to the painter points, up to now I was using the plastic things that used to come with pizza boxes to hold the lid off the pizza. The LV ones are much more stable.

Just having all the kids and grandkids get together was worth it's weight in memories. Everyone got along, with 8 children and 13 grandchildren, that accomplishment of merrymaking is significant in itself. The house, which has been almost empty all year was once again full, we even housed people in the motorhome. Yes, it was a wonderful holiday. Wishing you all a grand New Year, and happy sawdust to you all.

Sounds like our families are similar in size, six children with fifteen grandchildren at this end. Not all made it home for Christmas but our dinner table had nineteen around it on Christmas day. That included a couple of "significant others" for the grandkids.
