Scrap Wood Project

Thanks John, I gave it a try today. I don't have a Talon chuck or similar, so I used the face plate for the entire process and it seemd to work OK. I started with the live center and once it was time to part the tailstock end, I did away with the live center and finished the process with the faceplate only. One thing I learned though is that my chisels are in desperate need of sharpening!!!

I'll try and get my chisels sharpened this week and glue up some "real wood" for the project.

Hey folks,

Thanks for keeping me busy! I mean busy on this one. I don't have dedicated bowl tools, nor a Talon or Oneway chuck, nor large Forstner bits, and I made the center plank of this scrap-wood stack from hard birdseye maple.
What I did was cut the 5 individual planks to very rough shape on the bandsaw before glue-up. Especially the center maple piece was made into a tuning-fork shape before gluing. This cut down on chiseling and hogging operations, but those were still many (into end grain).
Anyway, a real learning experience and a way to be less of a couch potato for several hours. Photo attached....

Way to go! Looks Great! As is true with so many things, there is always another way of doing things! If it works for you....go for it!

I'm sure you are already thinking about the next One!;) Scrap wood does it again!

Lovely. One of these days I will turn something, makes me jealous. Once again, there is no such thing as "scrap wood".

I saw a use for scrap wood over the holidays. My grandkids were here and we went into the basement where my shop is. They asked if they could play with the scrap wood. I forgot how creative kids could be. They made trains, houses and you name it. When they got finished they picked up everything and put it away.
