GOT MY FIRST SHOPSMITH!

Post by Cliffy »

Well I bought a 510 used from ebay for my first SS and it came with 2 discs (unused), belt sander (new in box), conical disc (new in box) , 3" drum unit, band saw, jointer (all virtually new), all the tables and legs minus the knuckles, biscuit cutter ( NIB), router attachments and bits (NIB), router insert, shaper disc with one set of blades, new dado set, 2 books, wrench, 10er jointer head (nib), I know I'm missing something but can't think of what it is

I'm just cogitating on do I keep the belt sander and not the discs or keep them all. For what I will need immediately it will be the bandsaw, jointer and table saw all setting on the legs. The discs will be needed in 2 grits (easy enough to change out) and something to mold Roam Ogee trim (router bits (which I have 1/4') or the 3 blade shaper disc (which I've used in the past on RASs, I have an old Craftsman one in its box also)

I also have a plethora of orbital sanders, hand held belt sanders, drill motors, a nice machinists drill press set up on a separate bench, a Dewalt on-site contractor bench saw (fantastic rip fence, always parallel to the blade and two roll around 10 drawer mechanics hand tool chests packed to the gills. So I could maybe stand to thin things out a little - MAYBE

Used to have a garage full of dedicated wood working tools that I passed on to someone else for the small foot print of the SS in the new garage.

I subscribe to the axiom- "Man can never have too many tools!

Congrats! Keep the belt sander. I responded to your other post as well.

I too congratulate you. Welcome to the forum.

You might not need ALL of the sanding capabilities that you have acquired but I strongly recommend that you not part with the Belt Sander until you know that for certain. Depending on what comes out of your shop, there are times when the belt sander is the easiest and best way.

Decisions, decisions.

Remember, you can keep the belt sander mounted on the Shopsmith, on either the left or right side, while you use the machine in other modes. The belt sander has it's own table which is very versatile, can be mounted horizontally or vertically, and you can sand curves on the end roller and you also have a slack belt on the backside.

So keep your belt sander for now, use it, see what you can do with it.

Cliffy,

Congratulations on your great find. As I said in the other post about the Belt Sander keep all that you can for now with maybe 1 exception. Since you have the Jointer you do not need the 10E Jointer Head. The regular 4" SPT mount Jointer is much safer to use than the 2-1/2" Jointer Head. Just as a matter of clarification does your Jointer Head attach to the Shopsmith spindle with set screws that use a 5/32" or an 1/8" Allen Wrench. If it is a 5/32" Allen Wrench it was made for the introduction of the Mark 5 in 1954 or later.

Keeping all the accessories for now and deciding later if you really don't need them will save money in the long run over selling items now and wanting to replace them later.

I haven't even looked at the small jointer head yet but I will.
It can't be any more "dangerous" than a 3 blade shaper head :-) which I've used for decades without trouble.
Just have to respect it! But I don't see any need for it with me with the 4" jointer so easy to use (if it can be used on my machine).
BTW the jointer and all the other accessories came with absolutely no rust on them anywhere.

The only Shopsmith/Magna 4" Jointer ever made that cannot be used on any Mark series tool is the original Model 4E made for the Shopsmith Model 10E and 10ER. The 4E doesn't have SPT Mounting posts.
