Nick’s Sawdust Sessions, will they be back?

Post by Majones1 »

I started watching them when I got my first 10ER a couple of months ago, but I wanted to learn more about the drive train for my “new” 1955 Mark 5 and they say the video is unavailable. Does anyone have any info on whether this is temporary or not? I see that there is a Sawdust Sessions on Nick’s new site, but there are only 3 videos there. Could it be that he is moving them to his new site? I wonder who owns the copyright in them.

My Idler shaft is getting extremely hot, after running the speed up and down twice, and I would like to watch a good video on taking it apart to check out the components there.

1) not likely they will be back. Nick is no longer associated with SS.

2) Idler shaft is notorious for running hot especially at higher speeds. Attaching a hub helps dissapaite the heat.

I just checked and it looks like ALL of the Sawdust Sessions have been taken down. This is a NEW occurrence. Does anyone know what happened to them and why they were taken down? I know Shopsmith sells one DVD with Sawdust Sessions but I think it is only a small portion of the total number of Sawdust Session videos. Unless someone has finally decided to sell these, I don't understand why these were all removed suddenly. I know the last one I accessed was about the speed control (Session #17) and this was maybe 6 months ago that I watched it online. It is missing now along with all of the rest. Who owns the website below?

That domain name is owned by RLF Shop LLC, and it is a CNAME record in DNS that points to shopsmith.com, which means it is hosted on the ShopSmith.com web servers.

I can understand why the sessions that are about buying and restoring a mark V are unavailable being that they are on dvd and Shopsmith sells them (I bought them, and the rest of the ones by Nick). https://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/cat ... _index.htm

Nick told me awhile back that Shopsmith wanted to put all of the sawdust sessions on dvd. So Nick started to do just that, but being that the videos were shot with older technology, it was going to take a lot of time and work to do so, and Shopsmith couldn't afford to pay him to do all of them. That's why there are only the few that are for sale. Those were what was in the remaining budget, and the reason why the sawdust sessions ended. The money to pay Nick, and Drew just wasn't there.

I know there is a youtube channel that has quite a few of the sawdust session segments: https://www.youtube.com/user/ShopsmithHandsOnline

So, the last time this happened (see links below), the Sawdust Sessions website went down temporarily because of some maintenance on Shopsmith's main website? Does anyone know if it is the same website administration for the Sawdust Sessions website as the main Shopsmith website? Just wondering who can be contacted to attempt to fix the broken weblinks to the Sawdust Sessions now. I checked that website (http://www.shopsmithacademy.com/Sawdust_Sessions.htm) and there is no website admin listed for it so not sure who should be contacted to remedy it this time...

I looked at the DNS records and the shopsmithacademy.com points to the shopsmith.com domain, so while it looks appears to us users as if it is shopsmithacademy.com behind the scenes it is shopsmith.com. This means they use the same hosting servers, and therefore the same administrators as the ShopSmith site. Someone else may be putting up or managing web content for the academy, but it would be internal to ShopSmith.

Yeah, the ShopSmith.com website has been down for at least 2 hours now. Hopefully just maintenance.
