Thank you for reviving this thread. I use the Jessem stock guides for ripping and there are occasions where there is insufficient space for both the stock guides and the upper saw guard, especially on the outfeed end. The instructions, of course, say I should not use the stock guides when this occurs, but I really prefer the stock guides. This non-through cut riving knife looks like a good compromise.

dusty wrote: Sun Aug 15, 2021 7:38 am Prudent advice would be to use the upper saw guard at all times possible. My upper saw guard has been stored in the shop equipment cabinet for years. I have a riving knife installed on the table saw and hardly ever remove it. Yes, it serves the purpose of a riving knife for all cuts even though the probability of the work piece closing on the saw blade is unlikely.

I often use my "non-through" riving knife for through cuts, although for a different reason. I like to use a sacrificial miter gauge fence, which gives cleaner cuts and better workpiece control. You can't use one with the upper guard installed, but the riving knife is not a problem.

Thank you for the measured responses. That did help.-Jim

The non thru-cut knife does not provide the kickback pawls of the full blade guard or thru-cut riving knife.
In that sense, its one less layer of protection against a kickback.

I find myself many times using the non thru-cut knife on thru cuts because I forget to switch back :/

I think in general it is ok, so long as you have featherboards/hold downs, proper paddles etc to maintain safety...but i wish I would remember to switch it out to be thorough ...its one of those mental blocks I guess !
