Re: My Growth Rings with Scott Markwood
I support the idea that Jim, and everyone else, has the right to use whatever tools they wish. But one cannot ignore the fact that Youtube is about influence. Shopsmith's long time face of engineering is a serious woodworker and does not use Shopsmith's flagship tools in his own shop. I was surprised, and it causes me to question my own choices. It is a negative influence if it is perceived as one, period. Shopsmith, I would argue, is a company in dire need of positive influence for their products. On Youtube, specifically. But the responsibility is on Shopsmith, not Jim, to change things to achieve that.
I'm not an avid watcher, but if I explore a woodworking video on an influential channel I'd guess there's an 75% chance I'll see a SawStop in it even if a table saw is not used. That is marketing. An implied endorsement on every view. Rockler, Woodpeckers, Festool, the list goes on. And the opposite side of that coin exists. If I see Nick not using a tool today that he perhaps endorsed in a Sawdust Session, I may be somewhat more skeptical of that endorsement because he still clearly does choose to use some Shopsmith tools.
The conical sander is a great example of this. The Shopsmith version of this is, I'm quite certain, far superior to the other guy's. And I have little doubt that Scott's video boosted sales because it is a difficult tool to grasp the use of without video. But I also have little doubt that far more people were influenced to buy the other guy's conical sander because 1) more viewers and subscribers and 2) it "works" on a table saw. That's influence. And they will buy his consumables, which might not be as long lasting due to less square inches of abrasive, excessive speed, difficulty in changing just one side of the abrasive.

How does the venerable MicroJig Grr-Ripper hold up against a couple new kids on the (push) block? The new Milescraft GrabberPRO and the Delmar adjustable push blocks are the first of what I have no doubt will be many such products on the market. For an in-depth walk-through of each of these products, check out the video links below.

New LED Shop Lighting that even Manfred Mann would Love! (Too Obscure?)
My Growth Rings with Scott Markwood
Watch it here: https://youtu.be/Xv7Y8YG-Vug
SHOP NOTES: After a BUNCH of research I decided to install several "High Bay" LED lights in my new shop space instead of going with my original plan of using traditional linear lighting. I'm fortunate that I have 12' tall ceilings, so that gives the light cone plenty of space to get its elbows out and spread around the space. I misspoke when I said they were 18,000 Lumens though. These are 14,000.

I just realized that I messed up the edit of the video and failed to include the names of the "Chairman of the Board", who are channel members at the top tier and are folks that I look to for feedback and guidance on the channel. Since I missed them in the end scroll I want to recognize them here:
Albert Treado, Chad Nevels, Kirk Schweighofer, Gathering Splinters, Rick Parker, Tigger-56, Anne McDonley, niel jorgensen, Clyde Renner, bwstrong1, Everett Davis, John Rice, Barringer Training, David Carpenter, drumaganger, Steve Larson, and Lance Farmer. You guys and gals ROCK!

A “Real” Mini-Lathe for $150? Is the WEN 8" X 12" Lathe Right For You?
My Growth Rings with Scott Markwood
Watch it here: https://youtu.be/LnyFLElvzqc
SHOP NOTES: Our oldest grandson wants to learn how to turn, but his family has ZERO storage space, so after much research, I purchased the new WEN 8" X 12" mini lathe for him and our other 7 grandkids to learn on. This video is a bit of a departure from the "norm", but if you happen to have any interest in acquiring a small lathe for pen turning or other small turning projects this one might be worth considering. In this video, we'll unbox it (I know how much you all LOVE a good unboxing!) and walk through everything you'll need to know to speak intelligently as you get into this wonderful hobby. As for learning to turn, I've already posted another video on that subject that will get you started, and let's face it, Youtube is replete with loads of them!

Hi Scott, a little late to bring these points up but I just got caught up with the videos. I didn't notice any mention of the set screw problem with PowerPro heads. Detailed here in the Shopsmith wiki there is a problem with the motor pulley set screw coming loose, and another one on the fan.
While it's not a Shopsmith product I've found the tiny set screws on the bandsaw Carter guides tend to loosen and I'm pretty sure you mentioned that in a video.

Re: My Growth Rings with Scott Markwood
Thanks for adding that, Ed. There are a number of differences between the mechanical Mark V headstock and the PowerPro that make my set screw video and today's video on the quill return spring that I chose to gloss over! For example, I showed how to catch the special washer that falls into the depths of the headstock when removing the pinion shaft on the Mark V, but that method doesn't work with either a PowerPro or even an "A" headstock that doesn't have the access hole on the back. There are just too many differences between such similar machines! The tip about using blue Loctite is a great one.
