Personally, I have never seen Norm working with a Shopsmith, but I have heard that he used to do just that. For some reason I thought that Shopsmith had something to do with getting Norm started with his very successful show. If that were true, Norm wood knot have had to cover those registered trademarks. Now I am confused about that. But another thought on that: If SS WANTED the exposure, and DID have something to do with Norm's start, and then Norm signed on with B&D (Delta, DeWalt, Porter Cable, etc.), Norm may have had to cover the Shopsmith registered trademarks to satisfy his contract with B&D! Now, if that were true, I wood no longer be confused.

I am knot an attorney, nor do I own SS, but if I did own SS, I wood want all the free advertising that I could get. I wood knot beef about Norm showing my logo, registered or knot.

I speculate that part of the reason Mike's web site disappeared was that SS did knot like the unkind things that Mike said about SS, the company. Of course, Mike was also using the SS brand to create an income and in direct competition with SS (Traveling Academy). They could knot allow that. By using SS equipment on his show, however, Norm is KNOT creating an income at the loss of SS. He wood be giving SS free advertising as he puts it through it's paces. Can you convince me otherwise?

What I have gleaned/learned from reading several articles about the early years of the New Yankee Workshop and the use of the Shopsmiths is that Mr. Morash, (creator and producer of the NYW), already owned most of the SS tools, so they used them during the first years of the show (with the logos covered).

At that time the NYW didn't have any corporate sponsors (Shopsmith included) and used the tools they had on hand to fill the woodshop. They felt it best at the time to cover all logos on their tools to prevent any problems that might arise from copyright laws, etc. If you notice in the credits at the end of the shows in which SS tools were used, and in the books, there is no mention of the Shopsmith company.

I think some confusion surfaced and rumors sprang up in later years that Shopsmith actually helped start the show because some Shopsmith tools were used in the beginning. Which in fact is false. Shopsmith tools were used, but they received no sponsorship from Shopsmith themselves. The Shopsmith tools were privately owned by the producer of the show and Norm Abram, and not given to the show by Shopsmith.

If you get the chance to see some of the earlier episodes of "This Old House" you will also see Norm and Bob Vila using a Shopsmith, yet Shopsmith had nothing to do with getting that show started either.

I believe that when Mike Young started his business and displayed the Shopsmith logo so promanently, that most people thought it was a Shopsmith product, especially when most knew that Mike Young worked for Shopsmith. We all now know that it wasn't.

I don't know about Mike Youngs' bashing of Shopsmith, but if he was, that sounds a bit nuts if you are trying to use that company's name and tools in your product at the same time. Maybe if he contacted Shopsmith first and discussed it with them maybe things could have turned out better for him. I think the bashing came after Shopsmith put a stop to his using their logo, etc.

Using a company's logo without permission is no different than stealing someone else's property. He's lucky they didn't press charges and take hime to court (or did they?)

P.S. I have copies of the NYW episodes when Shopsmith tools were used (along with the NYW books that show photos of Norm using Shopsmith tools). They showed them years ago early in the morning on HGTV. I scheduled my VCR to record them and now I think I have just about every episode on tape for my private collection. Though nowadays I record onto DVD's.

Thanks for the info about Norm's use of SS equipment.

FYI, I viewed the "bashing" (your word, knot mine), of SS by Mike on his web site BEFORE it disappeared. The "bashing" was directed at getting customers for himself, and was knot added after. He was selling himself and was basically saying that he could help the SS user better then SS could. As his site is gone, I am sorry that you can knot view it for yourself.

Using the search bar on their web site, they list no results for searches for Shopsmoth and for bo-michaels. I saw it when it was up, but it looks like it may have been removed. Hmmm...

My guess that name will last till a Shopsmith Lawyer gets to work on Monday.
Well.....Monday is a holiday so he may be safe till Tuesday.

I don't pretend to be an expert but always was under the impression that shows covered up Logos so they were not giving free advertising.
