Resawing & Straight Sawing with the Shopsmith Bandsaw: Accommodating "Blade Drift"

Post by Chad »

My Growth Rings with Scott Markwood

SHOP NOTES: As I promised in the previous video on the "Business End of the Shopsmith Bandsaw" in this video we will cover the use of the bandsaw fence for straight cuts and for resawing, and while we are here we did a stupid bandsaw trick that the Shopsmith bandsaw can do by twisting the blade.

💡 Here's an idea: If you aren't ready or able to join the channel, you can always support the channel by watching, clicking the thumbs-up, commenting, sharing, and by clicking through the provided links whenever you are shopping on Amazon or eBay. You don't even need to purchase the items these links lead to, but by going through these links they'll reward us with a small "finders fee". Thanks in advance for the support!

🟢 I've created an Amazon list of many of the tools that I have found to be indispensable in my shop. http://a.co/0GLhuR2 You may have to click the "Filter" link to show the items in the list. I suggest sorting them by priority.

0:00 - Intro
0:19 - Shimming the Shopsmith Bandsaw Table
2:08 - Accommodating blade drift to get consistent, straight cuts
5:12 - Measuring the drift of the blade
5:50 - Adjusting the fence to match the lead (or drift) of the blade
8:07 - A little resawing.
8:51 - So what good is the miter gauge on the Shopsmith bandsaw?
10:03 - A WEIRD trick: Twisting the blade to crosscut a long board. I am NOT recommending this!
14:00 - If Congress passes another stupid law
14:30 - Leave your Questions, Comments, and Cheap-shots for inclusion in our mid-week video.

Post by Chad »

My Growth Rings with Scott Markwood

SHOP NOTES: This video we will tackle Q&A's from my last video: "Stupid Bandsaw Trick, Resawing & Straight Sawing with the Shopsmith Bandsaw" which you can view here: https://youtu.be/5lqzmibP3vg

We received a BUNCH of questions from that video so this is a long vid, and while I didn't tackle them all off the questions, I hope you find these answers helpful. Also, I totally forgot the trick that I tease at the beginning of this video. Sorry about that. We'll get to it in a future video.

Here are the questions and links to where they appear:

3:34 - Will twisting the top guide encourages more drift?
6:17 - The miter slot isn't parallel to the blade
6:37 - A bandsaw trick... I FORGOT to film the trick!
6:52 - Any tips to maximize the old cast iron table?
7:07 - Using the miter gauge as a fence on the old cast iron table
9:45 - What blade do you prefer on the Shopsmith bandsaw?
11:52 - Shaker oval boxes resawn on the Shopsmith bandsaw
15:46 - Cast Iron table VS the Aluminum upgrade on the Shopsmith bandsaw
17:08 - Any advantage to bandsaw on the Mark V vs Power Station vs a Stand?
18:45 - Wasn't I being unsafe when resawing?
20:34 - Reaching over the table to turn saw off seems unsafe
22:08 - Cutting joints on the bandsaw sounds interesting
22:19 - Cast Iron table VS the Aluminum upgrade on the Shopsmith bandsaw (Again)

Shop Short: The DUMBEST thing you can do with your Shopsmith Bandsaw!

Post by Chad »

My Growth Rings with Scott Markwood

In last weekend's video titled "Stupid Bandsaw Trick, Resawing & Straight Sawing with the Shopsmith Bandsaw" I did an awful job editing and left out the critical set-up that would have explained WHY someone might want to twist the blade on their Shopsmith bandsaw, and of course, some viewers noticed. I had planned on adding that "lost footage" to the follow-up mid-week episode of "Stumped Q&A", but because it was already running quite long I decided to only show the set-up but not the actual cut, and of course, some viewers noticed that too!

So here's the entire process, should you choose to attempt it. I don't recommend it, but as I say in the set-up, if you need to make this cut and all you have available to you is the Shopsmith, at least you have this ace up your sleeves!
