History repeats itself

Post by garys »

25 years ago in April 1997, Bismarck got a big snowstorm that left 17" of snow here after high winds. The winds piled snow up to 6'+ in many places. The parking lot of the shopping center looked like this after the snow ended.

Another of those Spring storms arrived today and is expected to last through Thursday. The forecast for this one is for 12-24" of snow and 50mph winds. By Thursday, the parking lots might look like that again.

That's a lot of snow. What happened to Global Warming?

Our weather is a bit "off" too. Last Thursday we had a 78-degree day, our highest so far for the year. Yesterday we had over 2 inches of snow. Not nearly as bad as Bismark. This is the latest into spring for snow on record here. Many years we do not get any snow in the Portland OR metro area. I guess it is still better than the all-time record temperature we had late last June of 115 degrees.

Love that picture!

My own experience was bring my girl friend (to be wife) home from college for Christmas. We got in about 4:00 in the afternoon and it was just starting to snow. When I got up in the morning to go back to IL there was 18" of snow and still snowing, but at a lighter rate. This was a Sunday morning and I was expected for work on Monday, well that didn't happen. At least the wind wasn't bad or where I parked it would have drifted over and might have damaged my convertible roof.

Plows got the road passable pretty quick but all that snow they plowed piled up behind my car. Got it dug out and headed back on Tuesday....

Actually, the 2 seasons are Winter and Summer. Spring is seldom seen, and Fall can be short.
Last Summer we had many days in the 90s and 100s.

Last Thursday we had record highs here in San Diego; it was 95 where I love, which is about 5 miles or so from the ocean, but 30 miles north in Escondido it was over 100 degrees. My sister, who lives southwest of St. Louis, said it was snowing there. Hope our weather is not a sign of the coming season.
