Gray Scroll Saw Rear Cradle Fix - 514982

Post by BigAl »

I discovered that the rear table trunnion cradle (part #514982) on my recently acquired 555220 Gray scroll saw was broken right down the middle. The design looks pretty fragile, so I would wager that this problem is not uncommon. The part is long since discontinued and the design of the teal unit is quite different so using parts from the teal scroll saw would not be simple. I figured out a pretty simple fix that is probably an actual improvement on the original design. I thought I would post my solution up here to at least give others an Idea to base their own fix.

I cut a plate to back-up the current cradle. I cut it diagonally from an octagon electrical box cover. I don't have dimensions. I basically traced the bottom part of the cradle mounting flange onto the cover and cut, filed, and drilled to match. I installed it on the saw and figured out where to drill a hole for a 3/8" x 1" shoulder screw. The shoulder screw captures the rear trunnion and the broken cradle, so I didn't need to repair the cradle itself. The photos should explain the solution better than words.

I hope this helps someone in the future.

Good idea. Mine locks in but seems shaky still, have to take a look and see if it has a problem.

I discovered that the plate I made interfered with tilting the table past about 25 degrees . . . so I trimmed it a bit as shown below. I don't think the table will quite tilt to 45 degrees now but I'm not sure it ever would. It can now tilt way past any angle that I could ever imagine using.
