Got this over the weekend and tore it down on Sunday everything was in real good shape and the motor runs. Looks like very little use as the motor only had a little sawdust, but who knows. #84271 any idea on date of manufacture?
The tubes were really rusty so I tried the Evaporust. I really didn’t think it would work. I put plastic down, then rolled tubes in those blue paper towels from Costco as I saturated them. Then I rolled both tubes up in the plastic I previously laid down. They stayed in there for about 28 hours and shit howdy it worked. Some pics to follow

That's a super job, done with very little overage!
I recall once de-rusting a bulky Disston miter saw with a set of soaked paper towels like that; it did work!

For serial number 84271 my best estimate would be early 1953. There are no records of when different serial numbered tools were made for the Model 10E and 10ER like there is for the Mark 5/V. We do have some known information and it is that information I use to make estimations. Nice work on the Way Tubes. It is amazing how they can come back to like new with a little rust removal and polishing. Below is a pair I did and I have had worse/rustier that cleaned up well too.

Thanks for the info. The finish on that tube is fantastic. I’m not quite there yet. I waxed them up for now and once everything gets close, I’ll spend more time polishing before reassembly. What did you use in the last stages of polishing?

Re: 10ER super rusty tubes and manufacture date?
Because I have done a lot of restorations, I have set up a way to turn them on my (now) Mark 7 using a pipe plug on the headstock end and sitting on rollers on an extension table. The turning is done with super fine sanding sheets after rust removal. The object is to clean up the surface but not remove base metal. The set above although not in too bad of shape really only needed to have surface rust and gunk removed followed by polishing. I have had Way Tubes with some surface pitting. They can still be cleaned up and used if the pitting is not too bad. A protectant can be used to help prevent future rust in the pitted spots. The last thing done to them before reassembling the Shopsmith is waxing with Johnson Paste Wax.

Re: 10ER super rusty tubes and manufacture date?
Thanks Russ-great idea with turning them. I thought about fabricating something similar for one of my MarkVs but just never got the idea to sit right in my head. The plug and rollers sounds like it might be way to down the road.
