I think you might be on to something there.
If the end of the control sheave is missing or has a damaged bearing and 'button' the porkchop might be experiencing pressure greater than 'normal'.
I don't think it is case of more pressure. The clicking causes a chatter and vibration. That vibration causes the porkchop and pinion to turn on its own. With a new bearing in there, it runs smoothly so things stay where you put them.
This would be good thing to check before doing anything else. The click and chatter is easy to see with a simple visual inspection.
