Urethane Bandsaw tires

Post by ryanbp01 »

To those of you who who have urethane bandsaw tires:
I had an interesting thing happen this past weekend. While I was using my bandsaw the tire on my upper wheel came off with the blade. No damage appeared to have happened to either the blade or the tire. Do urethane tires expand over time? They were the orange ones from Shopsmith.

I have counted at least a half a dozen of us here on the forum over the years that have had issues with the urethane bandsaw tires that Shopsmith sells. These bandsaw tires are red in the picture on Shopsmith's website, but are orange in reality. If you check the reviews on the Shopsmith website you will see that many have complained about them resulting in a 1.63 out of 5 star rating. I do NOT recommend these bandsaw tires and have switched to the bluemax ones from eBay. Check out some of the past threads on this issue:

A friend of mine asked me to help him install urethane tires on his bandsaw and when I tried to stretch them on to the rims they both broke. They would not stretch enough to get them over the rims. I was going to get a set for my bandsaw but opted for the rubber tires instead. Glad I did. In my mind the rubber tires are just fine.

I totally agree with you Bill. I bought my band saw new in 1994. After 28 years the rubber tires are just fine.
