10ER value and capacity for turning

Good day. I am interested in getting into wood turning and haven’t done any since jr high 50 years ago. This 10ER is for sale for $200 and may come with chisels too. Is this a good price? What is the usual hp for the motor and what is the largest diameter you can turn on these? I would like to someday turn plates or bowls _12” diameter? Also any comments on the bin of attachments? Thanks

As A Lathe the Model 10ER has a listed capacity of 34" long and 15" in diameter. The Model 10's make a great Lathe due to their heavy weight. Although the one you show in your post doesn't have it a Speed Changer that can be helpful as it has slower speeds than just the pulleys. 860 RPM as the low end for the pulleys as opposed to 425 RPM with the Speed Changer.

The most common motor that is found on the Model 10's is an A. O. Smith 1/2 HP Motor. A 3/4 HP A. O. Smith Motor can also be found on them. A. O. Smith motors were the ones supplied by Magna Engineering Corporation. I have seen other brands of motors on them. One I restored had a newer 1 HP motor and shows if the motor is the correct size/type it can work.

As for price that varies because of a number of factors. Location, condition, completeness and extra accessories all factor into its value. In addition check how long the Shopsmith has been for sale. That can be another indication that it may be priced too high or it is simply an indication that there is currently not much interest in your area. If it is missing items that can be a problem since the Model 10ER has not been made since 1953. That isn't all bad news though. Many used parts are available at online auctions, again some more reasonably priced and others overpriced in my opinion. Another thing to know is the Model 10's have the same size reverse tapered spindle end at 5/8" diameter as all the Mark series tools available today. As an example, if you need a Lathe Drive you can buy a new one from the catalog here in this site to use.

Outwardly the Model 10ER you show is not bad looking with a bit of surface rust on the Way Tubes. It is an early Model 10ER. Some of the items you show coming with it are not Shopsmith parts but that happens quite often. The motor pulley is a 4 step not the OEM 3 step 2", 3" & 4" pulley they came with so speeds will be different. The Table has a Jig Saw insert in it but I do not see a Jig Saw in the pictures. Having the Jig Saw would increase its value.

Ultimately the decision to buy and at what price is yours.
