Magna Bandsaw Plastic Cover

Post by hkp7fan »

I have my Grandfather's green Magna Engineering Mark 5 with many accessories and attachments, mostly in original boxes with price tags, etc. I have used it but it was in storage a long time while I was mobilized and deployed from the Army Reserve for OIF/OEF.

After I retired from the Army I got everything out of storage and moved to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. The movers packed their trailer carelessly, and something hurtled into the bandsaw and broke the plastic cover. I would like to replace it with an original green Magna Engineering plastic cover, rather than one of the newer gray "Shopsmith" ones.

Does anyone know where I can find one? I'd almost purchase the whole bandsaw just to get the cover.

BTW, if anyone lives in or near Reading, Pennsylvania and wants to go buy the one for sale on eBay, I'd make a deal to buy the cover from you and you can keep the saw. The guy selling it will only do local pickup, and he won't even respond to my attempts to contact him.)

Sorry to hear the cover on your Greenie Bandsaw was damaged. I restored a 1956 Magna (Shopsmith) Bandsaw which had damage to the lower right corner of the cover. It took some time waiting to get a replacement, but I finally found one for sale on ebay. Although any of the covers for the Shopsmith/Magna Bandsaws will fit I do understand your desire to get a Greenie cover. It will just take some patience and you will eventually find one like I did.

I had considered repairing the damage to the cover I have but the most difficult thing would be to get a good paint color match and have to paint the entire cover which will not look the same as the molded in color it has. So far, I have not found a good color match for the Greenie molded plastic parts. I also need that for the Belt Covers from the Mark 2's I have.

As you can see it would not be difficult to repair this damage but painting it is another problem I still have to overcome to get it right. Although it looks grayer in the picture above it really is a Greenie cover.

Below is my restored 1956 Magna Bandsaw.

The lighter areas on the cover are not blemishes but are reflections from my garage/shop lighting.

Nice job, and thanks for the info. I found most of the pieces, but there were still some missing. I also found it impossible to fit them together perfectly without braking them further, as they cracked off in different directions and I just couldn't slide them together without breaking them some more. So I did an imperfect glue job, covered the remaining hole with tape, and will just live with it until I find a replacement.

These are plastic covers for the Greenie Bandsaws that are over 60 years old. Depending on conditions they were kept in they can become brittle. Unfortunately, our tools may not always be kept in the best of environments. A 2006 Bandsaw I purchased a couple years ago with a Mark V 505 had the cover faded from, I would guess, extended exposure to the sun. Below is a picture from the seller and notice how faded the Shopsmith logo is.

I mention this because it can be hard sometimes to tell the condition of a part. Even with good pictures you have to be cautious. In the case of this 2006 Bandsaw, it is easy to see the fading and possible sun damage that may show up in the future. This is an easy fix by simply buying a replacement cover which is the current one. A Greenie cover may not be so easy to see it true condition until it is too late.

hkp7fan, this is not to deter you from getting a replacement cover for your Greenie Bandsaw but simply to caution you when looking for one. The damaged cover that came with the Greenie Bandsaw I restored was not brittle just damaged somehow in that lower corner.

Something for you to know is I repainted the silver Magna name and Logo on the replacement cover. After over 60 years the silver paint was no longer looking very good.
