she is at it again

Post by Hobbyman2 »

She like 6x6 hickory entry ways like the rental and wanted her own ,,,, the hickory has been drying for a while , close to a year , the moisture content in the center was just over 10% , I worked them down with the hand joiner , a belt sander ,a scrub plane , a palm sander and than cut the joinery , a power saw a 2in drill and a saws all and a real sharp chisel made cutting and fitting the 2in mortise and tenon a piece of cake ,they have 3 coats of boiled linseed oil and a light coat of golden oak to darken the lighter wood , now comes the fun part ,,,,,, drywall !!

what you dont see is the 1" and 1.5" x 3.5" deep dado allowing the 2x4 to recess into the beams . that made some real saw dust !!

Now that's what I'd call a cased opening! How thick are the beams?

-----------

They started out 6 1/8 or so green the post ended up 6x6 on the nose and the beam ended up just under 6 tall and 6 wide , Amish cut solid Hickory .

Yes!!
on the existing { bearing } wall the drywall should slide in behind the post so no need for trim , this was the reason for only recessing the 2x4 1" deep on that post . the 2x4 on the other post didnt need to be as deep and will allow me to add a piece of lath to the edge to bring it out flush for drywall , the same with the top . the old house is not square by any means so the small amount of bow in the post will fit right in !! :) :D

drywall instillation is nearing completion , once the finish work is complete the SS will once again make the baseboard , the trim , and molding . still waiting on the window guys to replace the glass in the new picture window , it has been near 2 months since it was installed , having doubts about J weld windows from Menards and their warranty service .
