Part Identification

Post by CharlieDill522 »

Can anyone identify these parts and tell me what they are used for? “D” has a Torx head screw in the lower end that appears to be for locking something in the angled hole the Q-tip is in.

These came with my Shopsmith ER, serial number R32797 (1947?). Is C a tail stock and E a headstock for the lathe?
Thanks,
Charlie D

P.S. duhh. I’m new. Let’s see if the pix are here now!

Resize the pictures on your computer. Operating systems on computers have software to do that. If you are trying to do it on a phone or tablet, you should start by reading the instructions for your device first.

Charlie D,

Once you get the picture(s) posted we can help identify the parts. You do have me curious about what is using a Torx Head Screw since I have not seen one used on a Model 10E or 10ER before. The Model 10E and 10ER did use a lot of Allen/hex set screws. 35 set screws for the early Model 10E's and 34 for the Model 10ER's as they came with all the original parts from the factory.

You said,
my Shopsmith ER, serial number R32797 (1947?).
Serial Number R32797 for my best guess would have been made around later 1949 or early 1950. Having the "R" prefix before the serial number means it was made in the Western Plant. Even though it says Model ER on the Logo/Serial Number plate it is a Model 10ER. The one pictured below is very close to your Model 10ER being S/N R33231. It is one I restored and is complete as it came from the factory along with having the Metal Bench Ends with 2 x 8 wood top, Speed Changer, Jig Saw, Jointer-Shaper Fence, Jointer Head and Lathe Chisels.

The Headstock has the Logo/Serial Number plate attached to it. With the Motor it is the Powerhead for all operations. The Tailstock, on the right end of the tool, not only holds the Lathe Tailstock Cup Center but also supports the Extension Table when needed.

Let’s see if posts any photos; I tried to reduce the quality. You are right about the Allen wrench head; my Torx screwdriver works, though.

A = General purpose Arbor
B = unknown(brand x??)
C = Lathe tail stock dead center
D = Jig saw blade backup post(backup part goes where the q-tip is)
E = Lathe spur drive attaches to quill shaft)

Interesting "patina".

Item D is called the Sabre Saw Support and it sets the minimum height for the table being lowered over the Jig Saw. It is adjusted to keep the table and Blade Guide higher than the up stroke of the Lower Chuck Assembly. The angled hole the Q-tip is in is for the Blade Guide to go in when not using the Upper Arm Assembly. The hole for the Blade Guide is angled up over the Lower Chuck Assembly. Again, the Lower Chuck Assembly should not hit the Blade Guide on the up stroke. The picture below shows its location. Notice the small gap between the shaft above the threads of the support and the jam nut.

For item A there were 2 sizes of this arbor. One has a 1/2" threaded shaft and the other a 5/8" threaded shaft. These were for mounting Saw Blades, Dado Blades, Buffing Wheels, Wire Wheels, etc. Yours is incomplete and should have a second machined washer. The picture below shows both Arbors. The left is the 1/2" Arbor and the one on the right is the 5/8" Arbor.

As JPG indicated item B is not a Shopsmith part. Things get mixed up over the years.

JPG & Russ,
Thanks for identifying these for me. I have only used it very little. Several years ago I turned some walnut legs for a dining room table.

I’ll use it mostly as a lathe, so parts C and E are most important and are what I thought they were. Better safe than sorry, though. Cleaning and fixing up the ER10 stared so I could lathe a “dish” piece for my grandparents old coffee grinder.

Get off chasing rabbits when I could have my grandson or his dad lathe it for me. maybe someday they will want this old relic - the ER10, not me!
Thanks again,
Charlie D
