510 to 520 conversion parts wanted

Post by steverboss »

I’m looking to upgrade my 510 to a 520, might any of you have (or know where I can get) all or most of the parts for sale used that are shown in the attached photo? Can seem to find them on eBay without cherry picking here & there. What would be a fair price to pay for the upgrade used? Shopsmith gets $575. Please don’t tell me to just buy them from Shopsmith, I’ve already dismissed that idea due to finances.

Doesn't Lowes sell that upgrade kit also? Yes, here it is: https://www.lowes.com/pd/Shopsmith-510- ... de/4087652

There are 2 versions for pre- or post-1986 Shopsmith 510s. Approximately the same price from Shopsmith, but you can pick it up at Lowes to save on shipping costs, and they have various sales and discounts available too.

Based on the cost of used parts I've seen on eBay I don't think you can do that much better from any known source. If you keep scouring ads you might find something for less but then you ought to wonder why it would cost less. Take a look at the cost of 4 and 8 foot tracks for track saws. Those run from $65 to $100 just for a 4 foot piece of track. Hardly any material in those things, just pieces of the same extrusion, very little there compared to the contents of the 520 upgrade. There's easily 6 times the weight in aluminum in the 520 upgrade kit compared to a piece of saw track.

I’ve already found the parts used for $335 and passed on it, so I was just checking with this website to see if anybody has one for sale. As I said earlier, I’ve already eliminated buying new as I am on a fixed income.

Have you looked at 510 and 520 prices on CL? Your least expensive solution may be to sell the 510 and buy a 520 if you can find the right prices.

I'd be tempted at that price, although I don't really need to upgrade. Hope you can find something in your price range. I have a fixed income also, I reserved money specifically outfit a workshop with the tools I wanted. I'm reaching the end of that process and also just reverting to being a cheapskate because of inflation. So I'm now much more price sensitive than I was just a couple of years ago when I retired.

I do have a sure fire way to find items at the kind of very low price I'd like. I go out and buy something for more money than I wanted to pay for it, and it can't be returnable either. Usually in less than 48 hours the same item will be available for the low price I was looking for in the first place. It goes along with the rule that when I can't find a tool and I go buy a second one and look for a place to keep it so I'll know where it is next time, then that's where I'll find the one that was lost before. This is what I call ironic karma.

If you have found all the parts needed on the used market for $335 you may want to go for it if you can. I regularly see the 520 Fence and 520 Fence Straddler Push Block for sale and have even seen the Alignment Gauge for sale on ebay but I cannot remember if I have seen just the 520 Fence Rails and hardware. I do see the complete 520 Tables for sale from time to time.

If $325 is out of range you best be satisfied with whatever you have. That is not a bad price for a complete upgrade kit. Those parts are in demand thus the price is up.
