Mystery 10-ER Manual

The fact that this thread has recently featured some posts about versions of the 10-E Owner’s Guide is a good segue into this next post. I received a recent eBay purchase today - a version of a 10-ER Owner’s Guide that I had never seen.

From what I could see in the listing, it appeared to be vintage and not homemade, but it’s clearly not the same front cover graphics and fonts as the Magna-produced manuals.

A little closer inspection revealed a faint feature that solved the mystery.

I’m not sure if it can be clearly seen in the the above image, but it’s a dealer stamp from Battels Hardware of Whittier, CA. Back in the day, Battels was among the leading independent vendors of Magna/Yuba products, and was generally considered the best source of NOS parts for 10-ERs well after end of production.

A little closer comparison between this manual and an original Magna copy shows some loss of resolution of the photo images - so basically it’s a professionally generated [photo]copy of the original manual, possibly commissioned by Battels to support the users who continued to buy parts there.

Makes sense that a large vendor like that would take this approach when they needed something they couldn’t simply order - I suppose back in those days, DIY was what you did, and not just what you sold!

Model 10-ER Shaper Fence

Sometimes you have to be a bit creative to get a nice, vintage in-box item. In this case, I acquired the box with a few of the parts from the original shaper fence, and paired those with a set of the main castings I had as spares. It was odd that the few items in the box appeared to be unused, while the original main castings were missing! Ah, if these boxes could only talk to tell their story…

Anyway, as is typical, after acquiring the box, I was most excited by the fact that the original Montgomery Ward price tags were still intact!

Model 10-ER Speed Changer

Here’s one that seemed to somehow fall into The Workshop Time Forgot - unused speed changer for the older Model 10-ER. Even has the original belts included. Nice little time capsule from that era…

Model 10-ER Major Accessories Line-Up

I’m revamping my home office space and expanding my memorabilia display area. I’ll finally have a nice place to put all these original, in-box accessories.

I managed to get a guest bed out of my home office, which freed up some space for display of many of the items I’ve shared here. Coming along nicely if I do say so myself!

Last of the 10-ER Brochures??

This came out pretty late in the history of the Model 10-ER (print date of August, 1953 - 70 years old this month!), featuring both the Model 10-specific jigsaw and the jointer on the back cover. It’s also probably the smallest full system brochure I’ve ever seen for the 10-ER. It only measures about 2.5” x 6” when folded up!

Just Another Model 10-ER Owner’s Guide…
…or is it?!

This one arrived at the house recently, and traveled a very long way to get there! Any of you 10-ER history buffs notice anything unusual about this particular copy??

Traveled all the way from "Down Under"...New South Wales in fact.

An interesting thing I have found on the Model 10's made "Down Under" is they had the Model 10E Logo/Serial Number Plates and started with 3-digit serial numbers. They also had a second company plate attached to the right of the regular Logo/Serial Number Plate. These Model 10's were made near the end of the US Model 10ER production.

Below are a couple items that have recently come into my possession. The first is a Dealer's item to help with sales.

It has how to set up displays, a description of how "SHOPSMITH is the best" for each of the 5 basic functions. 16 pages of Shopsmith info.

The second item is a third one of the Dealer's Confidential Information books I now have. In the picture below it is the one on the left and the earliest one I have. You will notice from left to right they come from Magna Engineering Corporation, Magna Power Tool Corporation and Shopsmith Inc.

They are full of information about the Shopsmith Mark 5 and the SPT's not generally shown to the buying public. If you go back to John Dalton's post on page 4, March 8, 2022 he has the same Magna Engineering Corporation book. The one I now have doesn't seem to have been updated very much as most Section: Item no: say Replaces: None (new). This includes most of the Owner's Guides contained in the book.

If you look at Everett's Google Drive of documents he has restored for our use, you can find Dealer Manual WIP which has the actual section on Manuals from the middle Dealers Book (Magna Power Tool Corporation) shown in the picture above.

Russ - this is a fascinating item! Can you share some additional pics of the other pages?

By the way, very disappointed we won’t have a chance to meet at the 75th Anniversary event in October! Perhaps somewhere down the road…
