Beautiful work! Thanks for reminding us of what can be created on Shopsmith equipment. I still haven't gotten up the nerve to try a bowl that large yet as I continue to hover around the 8" diameter range until my skills improve more. Also found the branding iron suggestion really useful. I don't have one yet, but if I get one someday it is a great way for branding items like bowl bottoms. Kudos. Thanks.

Aha! I wondered why no one had mentioned the dog face. I guess you just had to know old Tucker in order to see him in the bowl.

Thanks RFGuy! This bowl came in at about 10-1/2", and it really whetted my appetite for an 800 lb. bowl lathe. My 520 has plenty of power and turning capacity, but is awfully lightweight for big bowls, even with the Universal Tool Rest mounted. I had to keep the cuts very light in order to avoid exciting resonances. In the near term, unfortunately, sandbags are much more likely to fit in my budget and in my workshop!

Absolutely gorgeous bowl. I have a cherry crotch that I want to turn some day.

In the mean time, if this is not a hijack of the thread, maybe the turning experts could explain to me the problem with bowl gouges I keep hearing about. Not having done any real bowl work I don't understand why gouges would catch so often, unless it's just that any chisel would in hard woods like cherry.
