Dick,
I am a very satisfied customer and did not mean to throw an egg. I have an idea for re-doing my sled that use for cutting my segments. I am going to try to imbead my miterset into the sled. When I get it out of my head and into a prototype I will post pictures. Thank you so much for your product and customer service.

Here I am with egg on my face. kd6vpe certainly has a correct miter gauge so when I decided to make the MiterSet Segment model for ShopSmith I made a slight error. I don't see an immediate fix to the setting fixture as the holes would probably be too close together if I tried to make it smaller.

However it just might be time for all of us to listen to my secretary/Wife and fit a fence to the miter gauge head. This would be the wise thing to do in any case as it makes for a sturdier set up with increased support for the work piece.

I expended too much energy in making sure MiterSet fit the ShopSmith miter gauge bar and not enough time on research.

BTW SS DOES sell miter gauge extensions.:D

Guys,
I just needed time to think here. I already had everything I needed. So tonight I will cut an 8 sided ring and attach a picture. Can't wait but wife needs me to finish up my daughters bookshelf before I can play.

How many of you out there have the 555429 24" miter extension?
I'm thinking I might just get that instead of the my square so once I have the angle set with the MiterSet I could just start cutting. Any input would be appreciated. I'm lloking for accuracy as when cutting segments for a bowl it is real important so not to have to sand a bunch.

I have that 24" miter extension permanently attached to my miter gauge. Must admit to not yet using the MiterSet, but have mounted it to the gauge, and didn't notice the issue. Might have to use a straigh edge, but that's no big deal.

BTW loved your photo.;)

Might have to use a straight edge to reach a pin in the MiterSet, but that's no big deal.

I have found that to get the utmost accuracy you need to take advantage of every opportunity to make your set-up the best. It is just the nature of the beast.

I also recommend using a clamping miter gauge and positive stops to ensure that all like pieces are of the same length.

I use self stick stair treads instead of sand paper on the face of the miter gauge fence as it feels sharper and is very durable.

I also cut most of my pieces with the same side of the work against the fence, if there is any unparallelism in the work this eliminates that as a factor.

The fact that I am no authority, is my disclaimer, so treat my comments as food for thought.

Thanks,
Dick

Hey, I finally got around to this!

I ordered my Shopsmith standard Miterset early this week, and received it tonight. A super tool -- as described very well by all above.

Immediately I could see that my own stop-screw adjustments for +/-45 degrees had been off a fraction of a degree -- which was no doubt part of my last mitered box frustration.

Nothing against the Shopsmith miter-gage. The markings are really dead accurate from what I can tell. But they're on the wide side, and they can't be seen directly when the Safety Grip is above them, so a little parallax comes into play. The Miterset tool takes care of all of that.

Also the Miterset will take care of anything else wrong, such as a bit of unintentional taper in a hardwood miter fence.

I'm very pleased with this tool.
Chris
