Hello,
I'm looking for the best remover to clear rust in my old shopsmith. Any suggestion?
Thanks in advance!

Re: Rust remover suggestion?
I am right now testing a low cost DIY alternative to Evapo-Rust. I just mixed up a batch yesterday a quick test showed it to be effective. See this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fVYZmeReKKY&t=184s
I tried an earlier approach that attempted to use the same ingredients as Evapo-Rust, except for one unknown ingredient which may have recently been revealed. It worked but was not as effective as the real stuff. The alternative is simpler and if the results on the video hold up it will not only be less expensive than Evapo-Rust, but keep working on rust long after Evapo-Rust gets dark and loses it's ability to de-rust.
I'll follow up in the coming days after testing a number of samples.

Re: Rust remover suggestion?
brendahela,
Welcome to the Shopsmith Forum.
Check out the topic "Yet another "Goldie" Restoration" in the Maintenance and Repair section by AllenH at the link below. He has been doing some rust removal and cleaning up metal parts for his Shopsmith restoration. If you have Bench and/or Way Tubes to de-rust he shows the setup he made for doing that. His uses less de-rusting agent with a center spacer tube. Evaporust as JPG has suggested is a good product for removing rust and is quick but is more expensive than other products. It can be reused which, because of the cost, is a plus. There are other options that are less costly. I have also used vinegar to de-rust Bench and Way Tubes besides other parts. It does take longer (generally 3 days) than Evaporust. Vinegar is acidic and can damage some alloy parts found on Shopsmith tools so use caution. There is even a de-rusting method using potatoes.
