Anybody use VCI paper to protect their smaller parts?

Post by 2manband »

I've been thinking about picking up some Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor (VCI) paper to wrap up my smaller parts for storage; saw arbors, lathe centers, dado head, blades, etc. etc.

Something like this would be great, although I doubt I need 1,000 sheets - maybe more like a few dozen.

As an alternative, something like this VCI capsule might work well. I could just throw it in the toolbox where I keep the accessories and let it work its magic.

Anybody have experience with these types of products? Do they work? How long do they last? Is there somewhere that I can buy the paper without buying buying a huge quantity?

I'd like to be able to pass my Shopsmith gear along to my kids someday, but my shop is an unheated garage, so anything I can do to prevent corrosion is well worth it, in my opinion.

Thanks beeg - that looks like a good option. I like the fact that I could regenerate them in the oven (wonder how the wife would fell about that...hmmmm) and use them indefinately.

Hi,

At a surplus store sometime back a while I picked up this type of paper. It is in an 8-1/2 x 11 size and says:

No. 30A VPI (register symbol)
Type 1, Class 3, Style A
MIL-P-3420D
The Original Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor
1. Other side treated.
2. Use with this side out.
3. Do not open until ready for use.
4. Reseal when not in use
Ludlow Corporation
Packaging Division
Holyoke, Massachusetts, U.S.A.
DO NOT USE WITH FOODSTUFFS
1978 APRIL

It is really hard to tell of the stuff works or should that be still works but I have cut sheets of it that I have put with tools and they have stayed in good shape but I don't know what would have happen had I not had the paper... they might have been the same????

I'm guess this is a military specification item so the government must have like the idea... not that this should be a big deal. And I have no idea how they intended for it to be used.

As for cost I just don't remember back that far but this store still exists and if you are interested I will find the web site for you and you can see if they still have any. I think it was sold in groups of 25 sheets or maybe 50 sheets.
