Well the new (to me) Shopsmith fit in the van with no problem. I'm now the proud owner of Serial #48412, which I believe was made in 1979.
So far I have gone thru the power head and blew the saw dust out, cleaned and lightly oiled all of the gears, and oiled the sheaves. It looks like new inside and out. I don't believe it has seen much use. I didn't notice any play in the quill and all seems to work OK.
A friend of mine bought a newer Shopsmith, and I remember it being quite noisy. The unit I just brought home is very quite, so I believe the bearings must be in decent shape.
The only bad news I found is the on off switch works intermittently. I hear that is pretty common though. I'll have to get a new one ordered.
One question I do have. Are all of the way tubes and frame tubes interchangable? I'm going to polish the all of tubes with a jig I'm making tomorrow (I'll take pictures). But, I noticed one of the way tubes has a mark were the carriage was overtightened. So I was going to swap them out with the lower tubes when I put it back together. Any advice will be appreciated.

Re: O/A dimensions of a ShopSmith MarkV
Good morning all! Can anyone tell me the height (floor to bandsaw top) of an attached bandsaw on a 510(1990s version)? Also, could you tell how wide a 510 is with the jointer attached? Thank you all in advance.

Bandsaw height: Varies slightly with adjustments, mine measures ~64-1/8" with wheels down and locked for rolling.stihlsawer wrote: ↑Thu Aug 08, 2024 9:36 am Good morning all! Jointer: Mine measures 33-1/4" total length, including the fence handle. There is some variation in the handle among models or age. I would call this depth when mounted though. The Jointer doesn't really make a difference on width of the machine as it does not extend out farther than the legs. With the exception that the guard may extend slightly outside the legs. This depends on which guard you have and where the fence is positioned.

Thank you for the information. I'm planning an outdoor enclosed Shop Smith closet located on a patio to house a future 510 and SPTs. I plan on leaving the band saw attached during storage. I do not have an enclosed shop right now, but am chomping at the bit to woodwork. Thanks again.

Hello Neighbor,
I like your planning.
I will suggest building an Enclosure made of cedar.
You could also add a Little tin Roof.
(Double Door front exit) Possibilities and Design to your Idea's .
You can use the boards in later projects or use it indefinitely.

Thank ya sir. Cedar is a great idea! I too thought of a double door as well. I have some prep to do first in extending my patio after I clear some junk weeds. I'll post some pics during the prep and closet build. Getting a new roof this coming week so I 'll have some 30 year shingles that will match my homes roof. Are you near me?
