Mark V Users Manuel

Post by GetterDone »

I bought the book, Power Tool Woodworking for Everyone.

Now I see where I can download a 32-page manual from SS website.

I have a Mark V (1981) and 2 Mark V's (1984) and 1 Mark V (2002) 510 I think. :D

The one I am going to buy tomorrow is a 1996 the best I can tell from the seller's info.

What is a good source for a complete manual?

Are these on Ebay and I am just searching the wrong Terms Phrase?

I don't believe you will find "a manual" that accurately depicts the configuration of multiple versions of the Mark. Shopsmith took liberty to make changes over time without always changing part numbers.

I hope to narrow down the herd to 2 machines.

I just bought that many because they all had different attachments.

I will try to sell one in a Mile long yard sale coming up.

With me that may be Wishful thinking. :D

I have manuals that include both Models 510 and 520, but from the same year when SS was producing both. I think there are manuals that similarly cover both 500 and 510. Dusty is right that they may not cover minor configuration differences that took place over time, but I don't think there is so much of that over the years you are interested in. If you can't find one that covers both 500 and 510, my suggestion is get one for the 510. The 500 differences will be fairly intuitive.

I would not buy the ebay maintenance and alignment manual, as far as I remember these are sections of a full owner's manual unless this has way more info. This says it is a reproduction, it's not clear what it covers as far as models or scope. 40 pages, so I'm thinking it is excerpted from an owner's manual.(?)

Maybe your latest acquisition will include a manual. In my experience they usually do. Obviously you're not having the same experience.

I will focus on getting the 510 manual.

I was Very Skeptical of that one on E bay.
Thanks for verifying that.

I am getting close to lining these machines up and taking inventory of the treasures I have.

GetterDone,

The "manual" from the ebay link is only an alignment and maintenance section, not how to use the Mark V. It has been included with the Help Kit.

If you are going to thin down the herd decide which models you are going to keep and get the manuals for them. Unless one of the earlier 81 or 84's have been upgraded look for the Mark V 500 manual and the Mark V 510 manual for the 2002. The 510 is pictured below for reference.

Mark V Model 510.jpg (12.65 KiB) Viewed 2799 times
The distinctive feature of the 510 (and 505) is the round fence tubes on the tables.

As has been said there have been combined Mark V 500 and 510/505 manuals made along with combined Mark V 510/505 and 520 manuals. In both combined manuals cases they include how to use the different Table/Fence systems of the different models. Shopsmith does sell the most current manual made for the different models. Do keep in mind that both the Mark V 500 and the 510/505 models have been discontinued so the information in their manuals are older than ones for the current models. Older manuals to match the vintage of your Shopsmith are not as inclusive as later manuals for the same models. Getting a later manual than the vintage of your tool can provide more detailed information.

The most recent MARK V 500 Owner's Manual and Reference Guide part number 845435 available from Shopsmith can be found for sale under the resources in the learning section of this website. There is a combined MARK V 520, 510, 505 Owner's Manual and Reference Guide part number 845525 that can be found there too. Both manuals sell for $29.95 each.

You can find copies of a number of Shopsmith Manuals for sale on the internet sites but DO NOT BUY COPIES. You are wasting money buying copies since most are available as PDF's elsewhere for free. Other are copyright infringement duplications of Shopsmith current manuals and these sellers should not be supported.
