1954 Mark 5 rear plate style

I recently acquired a 1954 Mark 5 with a Bandsaw, Jointer and Jigsaw. Motor runs great and everything seems great (still giving it a thourough cleaning and lubrication) One thing it is missing is the Shopsmith emblem on the motor. It doesn't have the inspection hole like my Model 510 does, just two small holes that match the side pegs from it. Does anyone know what mine should look like? Thanks in advance

Note the back side only has the two posts that go into the two small holes. Originally a tinnerman clip on each post retained it to the headstock casting.

A newer version(for use with a "B" headstock) has a clip running from top to bottom to retain it in the large access hole.

Thanks for the reply. As I was searching the forum, I came across this post by pmateosian, that shows how he added one to his. I already have an extra cover with the clip, so my fears of drilling in the case are lessened.

The addition of a hole behind the rear plate is to give access for maintenance to the back side of the Idler Shaft and Speed Control Assemblies. The way pmateosian did his change has the plate needing to be removed by accessing the inside of the headstock to release it. Kind of defeats the purpose of having the access hole. There have been other posts about making an access hole patterned after the "B" Headstock one. That allows the second Name Plate JPG provided the link for to clip in place just like a "B" Headstock. The "B" Headstock shown below has the opening for the access with tabs (indicated by arrows) for locating the pins on the Name Plate Assembly. This hole cannot be made by simply using a hole saw as pmateosian did for his.

Some have made that addition to their "A" Headstock by drilling holes around the desired diameter hole and filing the hole diameter smooth while leaving the tabs to locate the pins on the back of the Name Plate in the proper position. The hole needs to be the correct diameter for the clip to hold the Name Plate in place. I don't recall the correct diameter for the hole and would have to go out to the shops to measure one.

I did measure the hole diameter which is 3-1/4" diameter and the Cover is 3-7/16" diameter. That gives a narrow overlap for the Cover on the hole. Now I wish I could remember the previous threads that covered this.

Did you have any questions about the Mark 5 you purchased? If you do, I suggest starting your own topic to keep information specific to your Mark 5 in one place. That would make it easier for you to locate rather than finding pieces of information spread over several topics.

The discussion in this topic would not pertain to your Mark 5. The Headstock changed from the "A" Headstock to the "B" Headstock in later 1955. The "B" Headstock is the one shown in my previous post.
