Hello,
My brother has had our grandfathers shopsmith in his garage for a few years. We're trying to figure out how old this unit is. We know he made a doll crib for our mother when she was about 4 or 5, so it's at least as old as the mid 50's. Based on looking at some serial numbers here, it looks like there should be 5 digits in the serial number, but we can only see the last 3. Is it possible the serial number is this low? We're not looking to sell this, in fact at some point he'll probably just start using it, it's all there.
Thanks

I'm going to be out there very soon and will try to carefully clean it up. Now that I look at this, I think that's just some gunk and sawdust. My brother actually sent this picture to me.

This link is not going to help, as it’s limited to Mark 5/V machines. Here’s something that may help the poster pinpoint this a bit better, if he can confirm the full serial number:

Whoops.

If you clean off the gunk around the Parker Kalon Pin that is holding the Logo/Serial number Plate on the Headstock we could see the entire serial number. There should be 5 digits in the serial number. Only Model 10E Shopsmith's had 4-digit serial numbers. Shopsmith Model 10E followed by 10ER serial numbers began at 1001 and the highest serial number I have seen is 102499.
I don't know what the list John linked to on google says. I don't google. What I can tell you so far is you have a Model 10ER, even though the Plate only says ER, and it was made in the Western Plant. The complete serial number would allow us to pinpoint it more but there are not any records like the Mark 5/V has as to when one was made.
It is older than the mid 1950's. The Shopsmith Model 10E was introduced in late 1947 and later followed by the 10ER. The Model 10ER was discontinued just prior to the introduction of the Mark 5 in March of 1954.
