Mark V 500 Control Sheave

About to replace the failed bearing and after looking around, is there any way to remove the control sheave from the headstock without removing the motor assembly? I already have the control dial removed but the opening isn’t large enough.

Sounds like you are you asking about the upper sheave. Either way it's pretty easy to remove the motor pan with the motor still attached to fix or replace the lower sheave, or to remove the belt from the upper sheave and remove the idler assembly.

Yes, the upper sheave. I ended up removing 3 motor pan screws and slightly loosened the fourth the tilted the motor down and worked the sheave out of the housing. I will follow Jacob’s procedure to remove the remainder of the button bearing and get a replacement. That seems to be the only problem showing up. The motor runs nice and quiet by itself.
