Talon Oneway Scroll Chuck Kits

Post by bgstraughan »

Just bought the Talon Oneway Scroll Chuck Kits with the SS mounting piece from Lee Valley, for my Mark 5 SS and wondering if anyone has some input to share?
I'm hoping to make a bunch of Christmas presents in the near future.

Looking for some good ornament and other Christmas present ideas?

Something else I'm wondering, is how to drill into the end of a project, when it is mounted on the chuck, since there is no easy way to use the tailstock for that purpose?

I would reccomend a couple of youtube channels. Look for Mike Peace and The Wyoming woodturner. Both have good videos on making ornaments.

You can purchase the tailstock arbor from Shopsmith (link below) and mount it in the tailstock. With this, you can attach the Shopsmith drill chuck to it and put a drill bit in it. Really easy to drill into a workpiece on the lathe. The drill bit remains stationary like this mounted in the tailstock and the workpiece spins instead.

First time I had to drill into something on the lathe, was when making salt & pepper mills. Here is a really good instructional video that I used when I made them and it shows how to drill into them on the lathe. Fast forward to about 3:13 in the video to see the drill operation.

Mount your drill chuck on this then put it in the tailstock. Feed the work into the drill bit to drill

Wow! What a great idea. Thank you. Now the only thing I have to figure out is how to get one to Alberta, Canada? Seems Shopsmith won't ship here and the company that used to do Shopsmith's operations in Canada as closed up.
I also have an even bigger problem now. I just helped my son buy a used Shopsmith and to make it easier to take home, we took the top end off of the waytubes so we could remove the motor. But when the gentleman we bought it from tried to replace it, he broke the end on the whole end piece the holds the tubes together, the part that you locks them into place once it is lowered from the drill press mode!? Found the part on the parts diagram but not the part number and how do I buy and get it shipped?

Got a Black Friday email from SS today. Seems like they are shipping outside the US now. Call customer service.
