That number, 00350785 engraved on the Quill is not a serial number. The actual serial number 350785 is from Oct. 1957, but it did not have the two zeros in the beginning of the number.

You asked about a list of changes made to the Mark 5/V. The attached PDF is a list of a lot of the changes made through the years that I put together. It is not a complete list of all the changes. I add to it as I find new information. It is made up of information gathered starting with the Mark V history list, other documents and even the tools themselves.

As I said this is not a complete list of changes. There were a number of changes/additions made in the Headstock components during the first few years not listed. An early addition that come to mind was adding “rocker shaped” bearing retainers to help keep the Idler Shaft Assembly in place. This was later changed to screws in the end of the eccentric and Headstock casting itself. Another early change, I believe in 1954, is the Drive Sleeve Assembly adding a clutch to help reduce breaking the Gilmer Drive Belt.

One change to note is the Shopsmith history had the Motor change from ¾ HP to 1-1/8 HP in 1962 which is incorrect. I included it in the list since the Shopsmith history listed it that way. I have an April 1961 Mark 5 which is one of the earliest ones with an OEM 1-1/8 HP Motor. The motor change occurred between March and April 1961.
