Quill handle spin

I have two Mark 5's, both bought used and upgraded to 520. On one of them, all three of the quill handles couldn't be tightened because the plastic handle spins on the metal rod. The single handle from the other one I have that I've been using on both machines is now doing the same thing.

Has anyone found a way to re-secure these so they are useful again? I don't want to experiment with epoxies or glue if someone else has already solved the problem.

Fortunately the handle from my 10-ER will work for the time being.

I have one of those. I have extras so not much of a concern. A couple of times I tightened it with pliers until I remembered to replace it. I figured I'd break the handle open to see how it was held together. It'd be my preference to replace it with a ball end threaded on. Don't know how others feel about the handle shape.

Silly me, My 10 ER handle threads in, but not foar enough to do anything, so I did a little exploring with one of the handles. With a little bit of twisting and pulling by hand, the grip came off the shaft

The grip is just friction fit onto the metal shaft. I couldn't see any evidence of an adhesive inside the grip or on the shaft itself.

I cleaned it up and glued the grip back onto the shaft with some original Gorilla Glue. I'll let you know how holds up. In the mean time I'm using pliers and living with spinny handles.

I also discovered that on the three handle hub, only one of the three holes is threaded deep enough screw the handle in all the way.

That is the way it is supposed to be. Two handles are screwed on tight and the third handle is aligned with the "dimple" on the shaft and tightened down it hold it in place. I have a piece of black electrical tape wrapped around the shaft of the adjustable handle so I know which one to tighten when I install the quill feed handle.

That makes complete sense and what I figured once I noticed it. The fact that I've been using it for 8 years and didn't notice until now just shows how unobservant I am. I also didn't know my 2014 Volvo which I've driven well over 100,000 miles had rain sensing wipers until a couple of weeks ago when I needed the windshield replaced.

I just checked on the one handle I glued and it seems to be solid so I'll see how it holds up and either glue the others or thread the ends of the rods on the others and use ball handles instead as Ed suggested.

It'd be my preference to replace it with a ball end threaded on. Don't know how others feel about the handle shape.

I much prefer ball ends. They fit my hand no matter what the position is. If I got the plastic handle off, I would thread the end and buy a ball knob to fit.
