Shopsmith Maintenance and Upgrade Support?

Hi everyone,
I am new to Shopsmith and would like to learn how to maintain and upgrade my machine to optimize its performance. I am particularly interested in replacing parts, maintaining the motor, and useful accessories to extend the functionality of my machine. Does anyone have experience or advice on upgrades worth investing in? I would also like to know common errors and how to fix them. I look forward to hearing from you guys in the forum!

What Machine do you own?

This is important to help give you the correct answers. The first Shopsmith tool was invented and went to market in 1947. That was the Shopsmith Model 10E which was followed by the Model 10ER. In 1954 the Mark 5 was introduced replacing the Model 10ER. Since then, there have several additional Mark series tools. They include the Mark 2, Mark VII (1960's version), Mark V, Mark V 500, Mark V 510/505, Mark V 520, Mark 1, Mark 7 (the current model) and the Mark 4. The Mark 5 has continued through the years becoming the Mark V 500 and is the basis for the other Mark V models plus the Mark 7 & 4. Not only is the Model of Shopsmith you have important but so is when it was made. From its introduction in 1954 there have been many changes made to the original Mark 5/V.

Hopefully you received an Owner's Manual with your Shopsmith. It's a valuable reference on using and maintaining your tool. There is a goldmine of information already contained here on the Shopsmith Forum and members willing to help guide you.

As for upgrades, ask about those you may be interested in but there will be varying opinions as to their value. Those opinions will be based on the varying needs and use of the person giving it.
