Help with Deciding

Post by NewGuy »

Hello everyone! I've recently discovered shopsmith and subsequently this forum. I'm looking at purchasing a used machine. I'll post some marketplace links of what I believe are my best options near me. I can get what looks like a decent one for 500. I'm trying to figure out if the power pro is worth an extra thousand or if I'd be better off saving the money. There's also a mark seven in there for 2k. Then there is a listing of a model 10 and 10er on custom rolling stands for 950. I'm having trouble deciding which ones are worth the money. I'd love to buy the mark VII from 2019 with the power pro but just not sure if that makes any sense when I can get one without the power pro for a quarter of the price. Enough rambling. Thank you all for the help!!

I'll post links if that helps -- going to wait on case it's against the rules.

The Mark 7 for $2000 and the Mark V Model 520 w/ PowerPro for $1700 both feature the latest/current table system which is a huge plus. I'd consider both of those to be in the great deal range. The Model 500 for $500 is okay, I would not call that a great deal. The Model 500 for $2000 has a lot of SPTs but I think that price is way too high for a Model 500. I'm not a Model 10 guy, but feel the price on those is high.

IIWM I would choose between the Mark 7 and the 520 PowerPro based primarily on how you will use it. The Mark 7 comes with a Universal Tool Rest which is excellent if you will be using the lathe a lot. The 520 has a Bandsaw and Jointer which are pretty practical for woodworking other than with the lathe. If you want it all, I would go with the Mark 7 because Bandsaws and Jointers are pretty easy to find used and Universal Tool Rests are not.

I am admittedly biased in favor of both PowerPro and the Pro Fence table system on the Mark 7 and Model 520. I also prefer the Double Tilt Base of the Mark 7. There is not necessarily consensus among the members on these features.

As JPG said, not everyone has access to Facebook. Likewise with imgur. Never heard of it. Can't see the pictures but have to agree with David. As for the model 10's, again without seeing the pictures they are way over priced.

When you click the link what happens? Is there a way to post them here? I tried to figure that out but didn't see an option. Thank you
