Power Pro 2 touch screen problems

Post by Ruston »

Good Morning all,
I purchased a DYI upgrade kit for my Mark V 500. Installed it and to say the least it was a huge improvement over the old model. Now about 7 months into the upgrade my touch screen is having issues. The Start and Stop is not working correctly. I have to push numerous times to get it to turn on and about half the time when I touch Stop, it starts right back up again. This issue is a great concern to me.
I tried a search for this and I could not find any reported issues like this.
Any suggestions?

Thanks, Jeff B.

It sounds like your upgrade kit should still be under warranty. I would start by contacting Shopsmith Customer Service.

I don't have a Gen 2, but it appears to me that you can remove the control panel and temporarily connect your Gen 1 control panel to confirm a control panel problem. Screwing the Gen 1 panel to the headstock would require major surgery, but I would think you should be able to connect the wire cable and it should work.(?)

On a Gen 1, and I presume this can also occur on a Gen 2, the ribbon cable that connects the control panel to the power supply/controller sometimes partially unseats at the control panel connector. IIUC this should be easily resolved on a Gen 2.

Jeff,

Sorry this is happening. From an electronics perspective, these touchscreens, well the more modern ones, started as resistive touchscreens. Meaning the resistance of a finger touching the screen would be used to determine the location pressed. These didn't work as well and eventually capacitive touchscreens replaced resistance touchscreens in most products. For example, if you have a smartphone like an iPhone it uses a capacitive touchscreen. It detects a screen press by sensing changes in the electrical charge at that point of contact. Assuming it is a capacitive touchscreen, try to clean the screen well. ANYTHING, like sawdust or fingerprint oils, on the screen can easily interfere with the electronics sensing where and how hard you press on a touchscreen. Microfiber clothes work well for cleaning them, but you can also use a lightly damp cloth and dry it well afterwards. Another thing to look out for is most LCD screens come with a thin plastic film that protects the screen in shipment, but are meant to be removed once the product is received. Make sure if you didn't already remove this, IF still installed, that you remove it. Usually there is a small overhanging tab to these for pulling them off. Okay, if none if this is helpful, know that LCD touchscreens can fail. I won't go into all of the different failure modes, but they do breakdown. Also to be considered is the ADC (Analog-to-Digital-Converter) and related circuitry that measures the signal coming from the LCD touchscreen. David gave you some really good troubleshooting tips above to also try to get to the bottom of this. Hope this helps.

Thank you guys for the information. I will try cleaning very good. See if that helps. The film is off and I do not have a GEN one controller. I went right straight from the old original to the electronic version so I will give that a try and let you know thank you again
