Arbor, saw guard, table match
I recently acquired a Shopsmith with several different components. I believe I have a matching saw guard for what I believe is a mark VII table. Am I correct to think I need part number 555321 Arbor for 5/8 sawblades with this table and guard configuration? The arbor that came with it seems too long. Is there a specific arbor for dado blades that match the mark seven components I already have? Or does this universal work, but I just need a spacer for the guard?

Are you sure that guard is not from a clone?

The Lower Saw Blade Guard on your 1970's Mark 5 is part number 505628 made for the Mark 5/V 500 with the original Table System like yours. It uses the Upper Saw Blade Guard part number 505627 and both are shown below.

There was a spacer made for this lower Saw Blade Guard as seen below. It simply went between the main casting of the guard and the outer plate using the longer screws supplied with the spacer. The Spacer gives you more clearance in the Lower Guard for Dados and Molders. With the spacer you could use that longer 5/8" Arbor you have.

There was a different Lower Saw Blade Guard part number 505705 that also used the same upper Guard (505627) above that came out with the Mark VII in the 1960's. That one is below.

As for the Arbors I have labeled them in your picture below.

Arbor part number 505506 is the 5/8" Universal Arbor AKA Molder/Dado Arbor as it is currently called. Yours is the 2nd version of 4 under that part number. As it is now called the Molder/Dado Arbor, it is for that function. The current version #4 has a bit longer threaded shaft than the previous versions. For a time, there was a specific Molder/Dado Arbor part number 555619 shown in the group of Arbors in the picture below. It was made for the SawSmith Table Saw.
The other Arbor P/N 555608 is for the other Mark V models (510, 505 and 520/520S) plus the Mark 7 & 4 needing the longer 5/8" Arbor for Saw Blades due to the design of the Lower Saw Blade Guard. For Mark 5/V 500 with the original Table System, you are correct, the 5/8" Saw Blade Arbor P/N 555321 (seen in the group of Arbors below) should be used. It is next to the 5/8" Arbor P/N 555118 which is the predecessor to the current 5/8" Saw Blade Arbor for the other Mark V models and is the one you have. 555608 was originally made for the SawSmith Table Saw also. 555118 and 555608 space the Saw Blade further from the Quill end to allow the correct spacing for the Lower Saw Blade Guard of the other Mark V models. When used with the Mark 5/V 500 Lower Saw Blade Guard you have, it puts the Saw Blade against the outer side of the Guard.

The Arbors in the picture above are all 5/8" Arbors dating back to the first one (upper left) from 1947 through current Arbors.
